Lincoln Hills to dedicate

During most of her nearly 100 years,

Nancelia (Nancy) E. Scott Jackson enjoyed

spending her summers in the Lincoln Hills

neighborhood in northeast-

ern Gilpin County. Accord-

ingly, the late Jackson’s

memory will continue to

live on at Lincoln Hills for

many generations.

The non-profit Lincoln

Hills Cares organization

will rename its Camp

Nizhoni building the

“Nancelia E. Scott Jackson

Nizhoni Building” during a

10 a.m. ceremony on Satur-

day, Sept. 13, at 103 Phillis

Wheatley Way in Lincoln

Hills.

Founded in 1927 by the

Phillis Wheatley Branch of

the YWCA in Denver, Camp

Nizhoni was a pioneering

camp for African American

girls, providing a safe space

amid racial segregation. This transforma-

tive environment allowed young women to

connect with nature, learn outdoor skills, and

build lasting community bonds.

The decision to name the building after

Nancelia (Nancy) Jackson has been meaningful

to her family, including her son, Gary Jackson.

As a retired senior Denver judge, Gary Jackson

has spent years sharing the Lincoln Hills story

with audiences nationwide. In recent years,

some of Lincoln Hills’ buildings have earned

local and federal historic designations.

The official renaming ceremony will honor

the longtime Lincoln Hills icon, who passed

away in August 2024, less than two months

th birthday. During a fam-

ily gathering at the family’s Zephyr Cabin

in Lincoln Hills in July 2024, Mrs. Jackson

received a birthday card from Vice President

Kamala Harris.

“The importance of this building is im-

mense,” Judge Jackson told the Weekly

Register-Call. “The Phillis Wheatley Black

YWCA operated from 1925 to 1945 in Lincoln

Hills, during a period when Colorado was a

stronghold for the KKK and Black girls were

prohibited from camping with white girls.

Even more horrific, Black people were afraid

to go to certain places in the mountains

because of fear of death or injury from people

who hid their activities under the cover of de

facto laws and policies, and sheets.”

He continued, “The Camp Nizhoni building

was a safe haven and oasis for Mom at age 14

in 1939 when she spent a week at the camp,

arriving on the Dinky train, living in the

Nizhoni building for a week with Black girls

from across the nation. Mom recorded her

week with daily writing in her diary, now on

display at the History Colorado Museum. Her

entries included noting that she received a

letter from her dad with a dollar bill, so that

she would have spending money at camp.

Nancelia E. Scott Jackson was regarded

as the “Dame of Cherry Creek” because she

lived in the popular Denver neighborhood on

Garfield Street for 98 years.

“This move exemplified the family’s pursuit

of a brighter future, and as they navigated

the complexities of race, Nancy developed

the perseverance, resilience, and adaptability

that would define her life,” according to her

son.

Throughout her life, Nancy Jackson

experienced periods from the Great Depres-

sion to the Civil Rights Movement. “She

was a gentle force of change who advocated

for social justice and equity, often penning

letters to officials and staying engaged in the

civic arena. Nancy voted in every election

from age 21 and proudly served as an elec-

tion official for over 30 years. She believed in

making her voice count and passed that pas-

sion for democracy on to her children and

community,” Judge Jackson recalled.

Nancelia’s grandfather, William Pitts, was

born into slavery in Missouri and later built

homes in the historic Lincoln Hills area. The

family cabin he constructed there became a

treasured retreat.

In 1945, she married World War II soldier

Floyd McGlother Jackson Jr. They raised

three children: Gary, Larry, and Kimberle,

whom Nancy instilled with values of hard

work, resilience and compassion.

Besides being a mother, Nancy had a

long professional career, working at the Air

Force Finance Center for twenty years before

retiring at age 65. She then worked as a

receptionist until 2012. Her commitment to

community service also included her church,

Scott’s United Methodist, where she served

for over 70 years as an usher and volunteer,

even feeding the needy until she was 93.

“Her life reminds us that true strength of-

ten lies in quiet perseverance, and her story

will continue to inspire future generations,”

said Judge Jackson.

Candidate Public Forum

The Board of Education will host a Candidate Public Forum on October 1, 2025, 6 p.m. in

the school auditorium. Members of GCHS Student Council will moderate the forum. The public

is invited to attend. The Forum will be live-streamed on the Gilpin County School Youtube

Channel.
