Gilpin High School’s Academic Decathlon team won second place in the state competition this year. The team garnered six gold, ten silver, and eight bronze medals in such diverse categories as economics, science, fine arts and being interviewed. Team members are Carrie Coleman, Kenna Norton, Amanda Norton, Laura Sill, Paul Schleppy, Tim Cook, Jason Wheeler, Mike Bauer, and Nick Tolwinski. Sill, who won nine of the medals, earned the highest scholastic score in the competition. The privately funded Academic Decathlon needs donations in order to be properly operated next year, said Gilpin sponsor Elizabeth Fonseca. Money has already been promised for 1993.
