Crosley Hotshot band entertains community with high-octane country tunes

Fourth of July festivities at Christ the King Community Church by Patty Unruh Folks at Christ the King Community Church welcomed members of the community last Saturday for a jubilant celebration of the Fourth of July holiday. Nearly one hundred people from Gilpin County and the metro area and their out-of-state visitors gathered at the church across from the Gilpin County Fairgrounds to enjoy a day of fellowship, food, and fun. The energetic band Crosley Hotshot entertained the responsive crowd with two sets of patriotic and country songs. Attendees were drawn to the church by American flags and a red-white-and-blue fringed banner running the length of the driveway. The event began early in the day with a bounce house and games for kids and plenty of visiting, hugs, and laughter for all ages. Door prizes of Chick-Fil-A gift cards and certificates to the Gilpin Community Center were announced periodically throughout the day. The band, fresh from a gig at the Greeley Stampede just the night before, fired up their repertoire with “Sing Freedom’s Song,” “The National Anthem,” “Radio Flyer,” and a fitting fiddle tune for church, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” Veterans were recognized and thanked during the concert for their service and sacrifice. Andy Fontana, lead guitarist and vocalist for Crosley Hotshot, got “amens” and nods of agreement as he noted, “Even though our country is kind of messed up right now, it’s still the greatest country in the world and we still love America!” The six band members fit right in with the members of the non-denominational church. Several of the musicians are Christians; one even holds a degree from Moody Bible Institute. However, churches are not their typical venue. Instead, they generally play secular music at fairs or other public events and at bars – “shining a light in a dark place.” Just like the church members, they come from many walks of life: president of a videoconferencing company, auto technician, street sweep, and violin teacher. They really impressed the crowd with their great music and humble attitudes and have been invited back for next year’s celebration. There were enough cheeseburgers, brats, salads and desserts to feed an army – or anyone from any other branch of the armed services. Although it was a time for fun and outreach rather than a religious service, the people were glad that in America they still have freedom to worship as they choose.
