Gilpin GOP tabs lightning-rod

Lauren Boebert as speaker

The Gilpin County Republic

Committee has floundered in

its attempts to win local elec-

tions over the past few years.

However, that hasn’t stopped

it from securing a nation-

ally known speaker for next

week’s annual fundraiser, as it

tries to resurrect its fortunes.

The GOP has invited Con-

gresswoman Lauren Boebert

to be the keynote speaker

for its Lincoln Day Dinner,

which will be held at 6 p.m. on

Friday, Feb. 21, at the Central

City Elks Lodge No. 557.

Boebert has become a mod-

ern-day lightning rod due to

the numerous media reports

on her stances on political is-

sues in Washington, D.C. Her

personal life, including her di-

vorce and a highly publicized

dating scandal, has also kept

her in the spotlight.

Despite the fact that neither

of Bobert’s Colorado congres-

sional districts is close to

Gilpin County, Central City

could see an influx of TV cam-

eras and reporters converging

around the Elks Lodge at 133

Main St.

Boebert was elected to serve

as Colorado’s U.S. Represen-

November. She represents

eastern Colorado, including

Weld, the Eastern Plains and

Douglas County. Before mov-

ing last year for greener pas-

tures, she served two terms as

rd district representative

for western and southern

Colorado.

Gilpin GOP Chair Marie

Mornis, who was defeated in

November when she ran to re-

tain her county commissioner

seat, said the committee was

able to secure Boebert be-

cause “we have connections.”

Corey Marshall, who finished

second in his November bid

to win the District 3 county

commissioner seat, will host

the program.

Before Bobert’s address,

Central City resident Peter

Droege will be a primary

speaker at the event. Droege

is president of the Belvidere

Foundation, renovating the

historic theater on Nevada

Street, and was named the

Weekly Register-Call’ s 2024

I call this story “Love

at the Library,” but if you

manage to make it through

the whole thing, you’ll see

that’s not quite accurate. I

chose the title because we’ve

just celebrated Valentine’s

Day and because February

is National Library Lovers

Month. Also romance does

get a couple of mentions and

there is a library involved.

But mostly though, I thought

calling it “Love at the Library”

might make it sound more

interesting than it actually is.

I spent a fair amount of

time at the library when I at-

tended Augustana University

in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Believe it or not, I was a good

student—mostly. But the big-

ger issue was that my room-

mate had a boyfriend. The

romantic life of roommates

has sent more students to the

library than algebra quizzes

and English tests ever have.

Like most libraries, Augus-

tana’s had a variety of fine

art on display, most of which

I don’t recall. I’d like to say

that’s because I was so fo-

cused on my studies but I hate

to lie this early in my story.

The truth is, I’m not the

most visual person in the

world. I once wore two dif-

ferent shoes to work. And on

several occasions, I’ve at-

tempted to get into the wrong

car because it looked so much

like mine—gray with four

wheels.

I admit these things to

you so you’ll know just how

remarkable it is that I not only

noticed a particular painting

at the university library, but

that I can still picture it in

my mind’s eye. The painting

featured a long hallway with

large black and white tiles on

the floor and a green plant

hanging from the ceiling. A

seagull was flying toward the

sun at the end of the hallway

and two large balls, a blue one

and a red one, were rolling

in the same direction. I know

nothing about such things,

but I suppose the artist was

demonstrating perspective—

the seagull flying and balls

rolling toward the sun and

the tiles getting smaller and

smaller.

To be completely honest,

after I left Augie, I remem-

bered the bird as being a dove,

not a seagull. That notion was

corrected some years later.

And it seems like a pretty

minor mistake when you

consider the above-mentioned

shoe incident.

Anyway, I’m not sure why

I was so drawn to that paint-

represented a light at

the end of the tunnel

neatness appealed to

the busyness of col-

lege life. Or maybe it

was magic.

after I graduated, I

happened to meet a charm-

ing, handsome guy who was

working as a picture framer at

an art gallery in my commu-

nity. It might not have been

love at first sight, but it was

involved romance.

years before I had.

lowed, I learned that he had

painted the painting I’d loved

so much back at Augustana.

So…I went ahead and married

him.
