Why Black History Month is important for all Gilpinites/uni00A0

Black History Month is a

time to honor the legacy of

African Americans who have

shaped American history, often

in the face of insurmountable

odds. It has particular sig-

nificant to me and my family

because of our connection with

the historic Lincoln Hills com-

munity in Gilpin County. Lin-

coln Hills was a Black moun-

tain resort and safe heaven

created in 1922, two visionary

developers, E.C. Regnier and

Roger Ewalt created Lincoln

Hills, a Black Mountain resort

and safe heaven. Through their

corporation, the Lincoln Hills Country Club Devel-

opment, they purchased more than 640 acres of

property.

Lincoln Hills is 40 miles west of Denver, situated

between the towns of Pinecliffe and Nederland. My

great-grandfather Williams Pitts built our family

cabin, Zephyr View, the entryway cabin into Lin-

coln Hills on South Beaver Creek Road. The birth

of Lincoln Hills was significant in that, in 1921, in

neighboring Oklahoma, there had been the Tulsa

Race Massacre, where mobs of white residents de-

stroyed more than 35 square blocks of Black homes

and businesses, killing several hundred Black men,

women and children. Despite that atrocity in Okla-

homa, 1,100 lots in Lincoln Hills were sold to Black

buyers. Winks Panorama, a six-bedroom lodge, was

built by Obrey “Winks” Wendall Hamlet, which is

included in the complex, Winks Tavern and 10 free-

standing cabins.

My memory of our family cabin begins with the

photograph of my brother Larry and me playing on

the hill east of the cabin when we were about 3 and 4

with the 1940 Dodge parked on the side of the cabin.

That photo depicts the joy and carefree nature of my

experiences at the cabin from childhood to the pres-

ent. As a child, between Memorial Day and Labor

trails, view the vista of the valley from the top of the

mountain, skip rocks across South Boulder Creek,

cross the railroad tracks to go to the ponds to wade

and fish, shoot my Daisy BB gun at rodents, walk

to the abandoned ice house at Pactolus Lake and

observe the silver California Zephyr train, for which

our family cabin was named, traverse the tracks

across the creek from the cabin. As a family, we

always had a weekend place to enjoy mountain life,

with the only cost being gas and food.

As a college and law student at CU Boulder, I

would bring fellow students to the cabin. Many of

my friends had never experienced cooking over a

coal stove or outdoor grill, going to the creek to get

water in army canteens, boiling the water on the

stove for drinking or cooking, or the outhouse expe-

rience, especially late at night. South Beaver Creek

had no street lights to illuminate the road nor was

there lighting for the side roads to the cabin and to

Winks Lodge. Though the driving could be treacher-

ous, the dark skies gave us a view of the multitude of

stars.

America and Colorado history. Black people trav-

eled to Lincoln Hills from all regions of the nation

because it was the only Black mountain recreational

resort west of the Mississippi from 1922 to 1965.

Artists and writers came to Winks Lodge to recreate

and entertain guests. Lincoln Hills became known

for housing the Phillis Wheatley branch of the

YWCA called Camp Nizhoni from 1925 to 1945 as a

response to Jim Crow laws and segregationist poli-

cies that banned Black girls from attending white

camps.

My mother, Nancelia Scott Jackson, was 14 years

old in 1939 when she rode the Dinky train to Lincoln

Hills for a week at the camp. While there she made

daily entries in her diary on the joy of spending a

week camping with Black girls from across the na-

tion. Her diary is housed at the History Museum.

The Sam Cary Bar Association was formed by six

other Black lawyers and I in 1971, the first affinity

bar association in Colorado. The association was

named after attorney Sam Cary, one of Colorado’s

early Black lawyers in the 1930s who had become

known for his legal advocacy for people of color in

Denver. He had a cabin in Lincoln Hills.

On Dec. 13, 2023, U.S. Secretary of the Interior

Deb Haaland signed the documents designating

Winks Panorama a National Historic Landmark. In

November 2020, the Gilpin County Preservation

Commission designated our family cabin as a his-

toric building. Both designations underscore the im-

portance of Black History Month and demonstrate

how Black people created a community in Colorado

in welcoming Gilpin County despite oppression that

occurred during the period of Jim Crow laws, KKK

threats and segregation.
