United Power working with Gilpin to prevent wildﬁres

Timberline Fire Protection

District and the U.S. Forest

Service aren’t the only organi-

zations working on fire miti-

gation and wildfire protection

throughout the region.

So is United Power, which

is working with the local or-

ganizations while continuing

its efforts to keep its utility

lines safe for the thousands

of Gilpin County residents

– primarily north of Black

Hawk – who live in the

heavily-forested sections of

the county.

Travis Rodlin, Mountain

area manager for United

Power, said the company is

aggressively trying to work

to keep its power lines free

from trees and vegetation that

could potentially fuel a fire

situation. He said the com-

pany plans to work on several

large mitigation efforts this

spring and summer in the

Ralston Creek watershed area,

near Coal Creek Canyon, and

the Dory Lakes subdivision.

Earlier this month, represen-

tative told the Gilpin Board of

County Commissioners that

United Power plans to give

residents advance notice of

the projects before they begin.

He commented the compa-

ny’s wildlife mitigation plans

include cooperating with vari-

ous groups, such as county

Offices of Emergency Manage-

ment and fire departments.

Company representatives also

will participate in local wild-

fire preparedness committees

and task forces.

Rodlin, who has been with

the company for 19 years,

said a revised wildfire mitiga-

tion plan will be reviewed by

United Power’s board soon

before implementation. The

company’s mountain region

includes Gilpin County, Coal

Creek Canyon, and parts of

neighboring Boulder and Jef-

ferson Counties.

The mountain territory

includes five substations, 55

miles of sub-transmission as-

sets and 405 miles of distri-

bution lines that serve 8,940

homes and buildings. The

company said it inspects all its

utility poles on a schedule and

replaces or repairs any requir-

ing attention.

According to Rodlin, United

Power plans to examine its

mountain operation and,

when possible, replace infra-

structure in fire-prone areas.

Some of the effort will include

installing underground power

lines that would replace

overhead lines, which could

significantly reduce the likeli-

hood of a fire starting from a

spark-ignition source. Howev-

er, in many rocky areas, such

replacements aren’t always

possible.

“A lot of people ask why we

can’t put everything under-

ground,” Rodlin told the com-

missioners. “If you’ve every

dug in the mountains, there

are places you could go [work]

for a couple of years and not

go half a mile. It’s very im-

two local tree companies to

remove branches or trees

within the various rights-of-

way. It also plans to remove

diseased, dead trees and

trees impacted by Mountain

Pine Beetle infestations.

Other vegetation beneath the

overhead power lines also

will be targeted for removal

to help eliminate fuels for

potential fires.

clear, interference from tree

branches isn’t like to cause

potential sparks that could

lead to fires.

United Power is respon-

sible for tree trimming

near its primary lines, but

customers are required

to eliminate obstructions in

the private lines serving their

home or property.

In early 2022, former Gilpin

Emergency Manager Nathan

Whittington began working

with United Power to have

50 new N5 Sensor devices

installed on utility poles

throughout Gilpin County.

The high-tech sensors, which

use Artificial Intelligence,

detect new heat signatures –

including fires – and alert the

Gilpin County Sheriff’s office.

Additional N5 Sensors will

be coming to the county. Rod-

lin told the Weekly Register-

[yet] but will be installing 100

of them on our infrastructure

year,” he said.

of wildfire by incorporating

practical and effective mea-

sures. While it is impossible to

eliminate wildfire risk to the

electrical system, the coopera-

tive can significantly impact

it by continuing to harden

infrastructure, removing en-

croaching vegetation, engag-

ing members, and upholding

the highest safety standards,”

Rodlin said in his presenta-

tion to the commissioners.
