EGG-citement overcomes lousy weather

because of overnight snow and near-

freezing temperatures? No way! The

Elks Ladies of Central City Lodge

No. 557 wouldn’t let that happen.

Instead, the quick-thinking Elks

Ladies, along with other Elks mem-

bers, transformed the lodge at 113

Main St. into an egg-stravaganza

of an egg-hunting wonderland last

April 19.

Obviously on loan from the North

Pole, the workers swiftly moved

throughout the top two floors of the

building, transforming several of

the larger spaces into egg-hunting

groups. Even the ornate meeting

room – generally reserved for Elks’

formal meetings and ceremonies-

was overrun with plastic eggs on the

chairs, ledges, and carpeting. (For

the record, nobody placed an egg on

any of the mounted elk heads.)

were replaced by – you guessed it –

eggs. Nobody could sit on the couch

because it was covered by – you

guessed it, again – plastic eggs.

showed up with their parents, ready

for the egg-citement of the event

that was advertised to begin at eggs-

Egg events for years…ever since the

Easter Bunny was – shall we eggs-

claim —a bit younger. When Friday’s

weather forecast included a chance

of snow and cold temperatures for

the next morning, the decision was

made to shift the festivities from

William C. Russell Jr. Park to the

much warmer rooms at the Elks

Lodge.

Because of the decision, there was

no tromping through the snow and

mud, no icy fingers or lost gloves,

and no shouts of, “Mommy, I’m

The final minutes before the event

began felt more like a fast turkey

trot for the men and women who

rushed to secure the final details

and ensure the Easter Bunny had

scattered the eggs appropriately. At

one frantic point, someone reported

seeing Voorhies hopping around on

two different floors simultaneously,

although the laws of physics claim

such a feat would be eggs-strordi-

nary.

The volunteers organized the

toys, bowls of candies, and boxes

of “goodie bags.” They quickly

dispatched the myriads of plastic

eggs (which had been decorated

less than 40 hours earlier) to sev-

eral places throughout the top two

floors.

In the shake of a bunny’s tail, the

children dashed around the rooms,

with some of the youngest squeal-

ing in delight. Others appeared

quietly bewildered or eggs-asperat-

ed, uncertain of what they should

be doing. (The adults helped them

The Gilpin girls’ soccer team

continued their winning streak last

week, improving their record to 9-0-1

overall and 5-0-1 in the Class 2A Mile

High League.

The team played to a 1-1 tie on

March 16 against host Flatirons

Academy, the defending state

champion. Junior goaltender Jadie

DeMauro stopped all but one of the

Buffaloes’ 13 shots on goal as Gilpin

rallied to tie the game in the second

half. Flatirons, of Westminster, is

6-2-1 and ranks second in the league

standings, behind the Eagles.

Gilpin recorded seven shutouts

against opponents as of April 19, with

five matches left before the regular

season ends on May 1.

Last Thursday, Gilpin raced to an

early lead and secured an 8-0 victory

against neighboring Clear Creek. Se-

nior Giselle Osteboe spearheaded the

effort with five goals, while Dannika

Sternlicht, Adele Fisher, and Jennifer

Rodriguez-Jiminez each contributed

a goal against the Golddiggers (2-10).

It’s a Special Occasion and You’re Invited, May 15

Mark your calendar! Friends of the Gilpin County Community Center is hold-

ing a special event at the Gilpin County Community Center on Thursday, May,

15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Community Center. What’s the occasion?

Every year, we hold an open meeting for Gilpinites to learn about the Center

and what FGCCC has been doing. This year, we’re offering a delectable incen-

tive: a dessert bar during socializing time. Come enjoy sweets, fruits, and other

treats while discussing with us and invited county officials about the Center’s

future, its funding, and improvements planned for 2025 and beyond.

In addition, we’ll be giving special awards to several volunteers who, over the

past few years, have generously contributed their time and talents to help make

the Center welcoming to all. They include individuals who teach special classes,

fair volunteers, and more. Come and help us applaud the extraordinary people

who volunteer at FGCCC and the community center at this free — and delicious

— event!

We’ll also unveil plans for a volunteer program for anyone to join to help us

help the Center. We have many activities planned with the Center this year and

look forward to sharing our ideas with everyone.

Come for the 5K, Stay for the Wine and Snacks

The Gilpin County Community Center is holding its first-ever Spring 5K run

at the Center on May 17, with proceeds going to the Friends group, which will

fund other activities this year. After the run, meet up with all of us at the Barn

for wine (for the adults), soft drinks for the young’uns, and snacks for everyone.

Registration fees are $40 for ages 21 and older, $20 for ages 12 to 20, and $10

for ages 11 and under. This includes wine, soft drinks, and snacks, plus a special

Are your kids ready for some Gilpin Flag Football?

Friends of the Gilpin County Community Center are excited to announce that we’ve

received a Denver Broncos Foundation grant to support the “Flag Football for Mountain

Youth” program for 2025. Friends is collaborating closely with the Gilpin County Parks

& Recreation team to assist in the development of this program and to expand the flag

football program initiated in 2024. The camp in May will also serve as a fundraiser for

the Gilpin School Football program.

The funds will allow us to acquire essential equipment such as first-down marker

chains, footballs, mouthguards, jerseys, snacks and T-shirts for participants.” The 2024

flag football program was very popular and served 30

participants.

The 2025 program includes a camp in May and

league play, or another camp later in the summer,

with space for 60 participants ages 5 and up from all

our mountain communities, including Nederland and

Coal Creek Canyon. We will also utilize the Denver

Broncos Foundation funds to help reduce the cost

of registration from $600 to $40 per participant. If a

Gilpin County participant cannot afford the discounted

$40 fee, we will assist in covering it through our Heart of the Community fund.

The flag football program begins with the Youth Flag Football Camp from May 19

to 31, occurring on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at

Pete Gones Memorial Park. The camp concludes with a Football Jamboree on May 31

at the Gilpin School. Gilpin County Parks & Recreation is managing registration and

participation, so contact them for more information.

June 7 marks the date of the annual spring cleanup around the Gilpin County Com-

munity Center. Friends is pleased to sponsor this event this year, and we’ll be providing

snacks and drinks for all who participate. The event begins at 9 a.m., and we welcome

anyone who would like to help us spruce up the ballgrounds, community center walk-

ways, and part of the trail. We’ll post an electronic signup in early May.

Heart of the Community Fund

We operate the Heart of the Community Fund to help folks who need a little as-

sistance affording access to the Gilpin County Community Center. We’ve supported

several dozen Gilpin neighbors over the years with punch card tickets for access, as well

as financial aid to cover classes and activities. If you know someone who could use a bit
