The end arrived for the Gilpin girls’

unbeaten soccer streak last week. After go-

ing 9-0-2 since the start of the season, the

Eagles lost, 5-1, at Dawson School on April

24.

During the stretch from April 16-23, the

team shut out Clear Creek, 8-0, on April

17 but finished with a 1-all tie at defend-

ing state champion Flatirons Academy and

a 3-3 stalemate against visiting Skyview

Academy on April 23.

Entering the final week of the regular

season on Monday, the Gilpin girls were

9-1-1 overall, 5-1-2 (third place) in the Class

2A Mile Academy behind Flatirons and

Dawson.

While the Gilpin Eagles are favored to

qualify for the regional soccer playoffs, the

team could potentially host a home playoff

game next Wednesday. Check the school’s

website or Facebook page in the coming

days for updated information.

Friday, May 2—High school soccer at

scheduled for May 9 and 10 at sites and times

Saturday, May 10—Second round of

the high school regional soccer tournament.

Fitzsimmons Husky Meet, 8 a.m.

Wednesday, May 14—High school

state soccer quarterfinals, TBA.

Thursday, May 15—Band and choir

concert, 6:30 p.m. The state high school

track championships will be held on Thurs-

day and Friday, May 15 and 16, at an unan-

nounced site and location.

Saturday, May 17—The high school

band and choir will perform at the Elitch

Garden’s Festival. Time TBA.

Sellout fundraiser for GCEF

A capacity crowd attended the Gilpin County Educa-

tion Foundation’s (GCEF) annual fundraising dinner on

April 26 at the Ameristar Casino and Resort. The event

raised $16,700, marking it as one of the most successful

fundraisers in its 14-year history.

The evening featured a delightful three-course meal,

wine, and an inspiring lineup of speakers, including a

graduating student from Gilpin High School.

This year’s dinner had three sponsors: The Clin-

ton Family Fund, Rudi’s Rocky Mountain Bakery and

United Power. As supporters entered the Ameristar

hospitality room, they were given name tags and tick-

ets for drawings for numerous gifts donated by various

organizations, including many local businesses. GCEF

President Sarah Swanson delivered opening remarks,

welcoming guests and thanking sponsors.

Following dinner, the guests heard success stories

from the night’s student speaker, Jordanna Gagnon, the

2024 Valedictorian of Gilpin County School. Gagnon is

an exceptional young woman with an impressive 4.35

GPA and is an active member of the National Honor

Society, Student Council and Interact Club. She has

demonstrated leadership as the captain of Gilpin’s

Varsity volleyball team, earning two Academic All-State

Honorable Mentions, and she has also competed in soc-

cer and basketball.

Gagnon’s achievements have been highlighted

through multiple scholarships, including the Daughters

of the American Revolution Scholarship, the Shelby

Allen Memorial Scholarship, the CSU Green & Gold

Award, and a scholarship from the Gilpin County Edu-

cation Foundation. This year, she was also inducted into

the Psi Chi Psychology National Honor Society, which

attests to her academic excellence. Beyond her academic

and athletic pursuits, Gagnon is an avid reader, artist,

skier, and concert-goer.

U.S. 6 in Clear Creek Canyon in

the rear-view mirror, CDOT has

resumed its ongoing efforts for

the $700 million I-70 Floyd Hill

project.

However, construction will con-

tinue for the Peaks to Plains Trail

project along U.S. 6 this week in

the Huntsman Gulch in the can-

yon. Single-lane restrictions have

returned between 5 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Mondays through Fridays and will

continue during the next year be-

tween mile points 267 and 271.5.

Rock blasting in the West Section

of the Floyd Hill project resumed

on April 28 and will continue

through tomorrow (Friday, May

2). The blasts and potential rock-

scaling cleanup efforts will occur

between the Veterans Memorial

Tunnels and Exit 243 (Hidden

Valley-Central City).

The blasting work will allow

workers to construct new bridges

over sections of Clear Creek and

straighten existing roadway curves

to enhance safety and visibility.

During blasting and scaling, I-70

traffic will be stopped for 20-min-

ute periods with no detour routes

available.

When blasts occur between 9

a.m. and 3 p.m., intermittent traffic

holds are likely on the Central City

Parkway, Clear Creek County Road

314, U.S. 6, and U.S. 40 near Floyd

Hill.

According to CDOT, work crews

will wait until traffic is flowing at

normal speeds—following blasts—

before conducting another blast or

scaling effort. Work is subject to

change due to weather conditions.

On eastbound I-70, left-lane

closures will block the U.S. 6 inter-

change (Exit 244) between 7 a.m.

and 5 p.m. this week due to wall de-

molition and soil-nail access work.

Daytime right-lane closures could

occur during the same hours for

utility work on westbound I-70

near the Homestead Road exit (Exit

247) close to the top of Floyd Hill.

Possible additional right-lane

closures for construction access are

also in effect through tomorrow

(May 2) on eastbound I-70 near

mile point 245 on Floyd Hill.

Additional ramp flagging

Through Friday, motorists can

expect daytime flagging operations

at the Hidden Valley (Exit 243)

ramp to westbound I-70 toward

Idaho Springs. Access will be main-

tained; however, short delays may

occur.

For motorists driving westbound

from Floyd Hill, daytime closures

will occur at Exit 244 (Black Hawk

– Golden) due to construction ac-

cess. However, access to westbound

I-70 from the on-ramp will be

maintained, CDOT said.

Free trail shuttles return

Beginning tomorrow (May 2), the

Floyd Hill Project will offer free,

on-demand courtesy shuttles to

assist Clear Creek Greenway Trail

users in bypassing the one-mile

trail closure between Exits 244

and 243. This segment of the trail

is closed between the Black Hawk

and Central City Parkway exits until

2027 due to construction vehicles,

making the trail unsafe for multi-

vehicle use.

To use the shuttles, trail users

should reach either end of the trail

closures and call 720-760-2718. A

shuttle will arrive to pick up trek-

kers and drive them to the opposite

end of the closed area. A maximum

of four people will be permitted to

ride the shuttle at a time. It should

be noted that shuttle rides could be

delayed due to projects occurring

elsewhere on the interstate.

ment. The new hires participated in ringing the historic bell in the council

chambers to commence the meeting. They received a personal welcome

from Mayor David Spellman and the six aldermen.

RAV4: new hybrid model for 2025

What made RAV4s famous was the stylish

spare tire encased in a metal jacket on the rear

trunk of the Toyota. Many of these models are

still on the road today. The line has expanded

significantly and is one of the firm’s best-sell-

ing models. The test drive model this week is

a RAV4 Hybrid with a suggested retail price of

$39,064. Final assembly takes place in Wood-

stock, Canada.

The rear spare tire vanished years ago, and

RAV4s were enlarged and fully equipped with

significant improvements in safety features.

safety rating from the National Highway Safety

The new hybrid model averages 37 mpg,

utilizing the hybrid system and a 2.5L four-

cylinder engine with a combined horsepower

of 219, both linked to a continuously variable

transmission. The powertrain works extremely

well, and the RAV has plenty of spunk. The

mode settings change with the twist of a center

knob from Eco to Normal to Sport. I used the

sport mode for uphill mountain road climbs

and the eco mode for downhill. After turning

off the vehicle, the digital display shows your

drive score on fuel efficiency.

really come to appreciate the backup cameras

and the 360-degree camera view of the parking

area, along with the cross-traffic alert. The in-

running lights illuminate the white/midnight

This is a smart and versatile vehicle for a

budget-conscious buyer who seeks a practical

option for both work and play.
