Childhood Resource Fair

Families, caregivers, and community members are invited to

the Gilpin County Early Childhood Resource Fair at the Gilpin

County Public Library on Saturday, May 17, from 10 to 11:30

a.m. A virtual option is also available for those unable to attend

in person.

As Gilpin County works to expand childcare options for local

families, this event offers a chance to learn more about the

supports already available—and how residents can play a role

in creating new opportunities for quality childcare and enrich-

ment. Those attending will:

Hear the latest updates on Mountain Kids, Gilpin’s local

childcare initiative. The forthcoming facility plans to take over

the space of the former Eagles’ Nest early childhood learning

center adjoining the Gilpin School complex.

Learn about Family, Friend, and Neighbor (FFN) childcare

options and how to get support as a license-exempt provider.

Discover the steps to becoming a licensed childcare pro-

vider.

FORT COLLINS – Firewood permits for the Arapaho and

Roosevelt National Forests are now available for purchase

through a new online E-Permit system. Permits can be bought

via computer or mobile device at any time, eliminating the need

to travel to a local U.S. Forest Service office.

“This new service is a continuation of our efforts to modern-

ize and increase efficiencies for the public,” said Forest Supervi-

sor Chris Stubbs. “The E-permits system will provide flexibility

and convenience to our forest users.”

To purchase a firewood permit or to learn more about per-

mits and gathering firewood, visit the Forest Products web

page. Traditional firewood permits and other forest product

permits, such as mushroom and transplant permits, will be

available for purchase beginning May 1.

The Forest Service will continue refining and improving the

quality of the online permit system and will add special forest

product permits in the future. For more information about the

firewood program on the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests,

The annual Gilpin County Fair, Madam

Lou Bunch bed races, and lots of other ac-

tivities are planned for the coming months in

Black Hawk, Central City and Gilpin County.

Here’s a list of what’s been announced so

Saturday, May 17—The first Spring

Wined-Up 5K race, featuring wine and

snacks, will take place at the Gilpin rec cen-

ter.

Saturday, May 24—Graduation at Gil-

pin County School District RE-1.

Saturday, May 24—Gilpin History Mu-

seum will open for the season.

Saturday, May 24-Monday, May

27—Memorial Day weekend.

Thursday, June 5—Opening day for the

Arts Show.

Saturday, June 21—Central City Op-

era’s annual Yellow Rose Ball.

Sunday, June 22—The annual Family

Fun Fishing Clinic at William C. Russell Jr.

Park.

Opera’s summer season will begin and run

through Aug. 3. Featured this year will be

“Barber of Seville, The Knock and Once

Upon a Mattress.

annual “Stills in the Hills” event on Main

Hawk’s annual “Founders’ Day” activities

will return to Gregory Plaza following a one-

year hiatus.

July 13—Gilpin County’s 32nd annual fair

on the grounds of Gilpin Community Center.

A parade to kick off the annual activity is

planned to travel through Central City and

Black Hawk on Friday morning, July 11.

Saturday, August 23 —The “Great Cen-

tral City Beerfest” will return to Main Street.

Saturday, August 23—Gilpin Histori-

cal Society will conduct its annual Cemetery

Crawl in one of the cemeteries on the hill

above downtown Central City.

Saturday, Aug. 30—Labor Day week-

Monday, Sept. 1—Labor Day holiday.

Saturday, Sept. 6—The second an-

nual First Responders Day and “Buck for

the Badge” rodeo are planned for the Gilpin

County Fairgrounds.

3 traditional events returning

to Central this summer

Despite the snow piling up outside, the Cen-

tral City Council turned its thoughts toward

the warm, festival-filled days of summer dur-

ing their meeting on Tuesday night (May 6).

The aldermen unanimously voted to sanction

the annual Yellow Rose Ball, Stills in the Hills,

and Madam Lou Bunch Day activities, and close

either Main or Eureka streets to accommodate

the crowds that flock to the city each year.

The 51st annual Madam Lou Bunch Day,

which includes bed races along Main Street

and a Miners and Madams Ball, is scheduled

for Saturday, June 14. This event, created to

showcase the early “Wild West” of the city’s

gold-mining boom, typically attracts about

1,000 people.

The city atmosphere will adopt a more

formal look on June 21 for the Central City

Opera’s Yellow Rose Ball, which has been cel-

ebrated for more than 90 years. Eureka Street,

between Pine Street and Moriarity Lane, will

be closed for a parade of gown-wearing flower

girls and a traditional waltz in front of the

opera buildings.

The following week, the ninth annual

Stills in the Hills activities along Main Street

typically attract more than 600 people who

sample alcohol products from dozens of Colo-

rado distilleries.

In other business during Tuesday’s meeting

and council workshop session:

• The aldermen said they are considering

various plans to address the speeding and

noise created by trucks hauling Off-Highway

Vehicles along Eureka Street while en route

to the Columbine Campground area. Among

the ideas under consideration is adding new

stop signs or installing a raised sidewalk

across Eureka, which would act as a speed-

limiting device.

• City Manager Daniel Miera and Gilpin

County Undersheriff Greg Demo said they

have been working together to address the

situation.

• Miera said the city seeks to collaborate with

property owners to tackle issues related to

deteriorating sidewalks and historic build-

ings in the downtown business district.

• City Utilities Director Marc Johns stated

that a water-meter replacement program for

the city’s commercial buildings could begin

later this year, while plans to replace resi-

dential water meters may take place in 2026

and 2027. Letters were sent to the city’s

water customers along with their water bills

to inform them of the plans. Discussions will

also be held regarding residential payment

plans to assist customers in determining

how to pay for the individual meters, which

will cost approximately $400 each.

• Mayor Jeremy Fey closed the session, re-

minding everyone that Sunday is Mother’s

Day. “Mothers are the soul of our society,”

he commented.
