Gilpin County Public

Library’s weekend hours will

change, beginning Labor Day

weekend.

The library, located at 15131

Highway 119 in mid-county,

will be closed on Sundays, be-

ginning Aug. 31. However, the

library hours will be longer on

Saturdays, starting Aug. 30,

when it will be open from 10

a.m. to 4 p.m.

Gilpin Stitchers Club

—Monday, Sept 8 and 22:

9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The local

crafters will be meeting at the

library this month to work on

various projects. Drop by the

meeting room anytime and

bring an unfinished project.

Projects are not limited to

those working only on quilt-

ing and needlework. Anyone

working on a craft is welcome

to join!

Free Build! with LEGO

—Friday, Sept 12, 1 to 4 p.m.

Drop in to create and play!

Kids can let their imagina-

tions run free while they

construct their own creations

using LEGO bricks. Duplo

and Knex kits are also includ-

ed. Children under 8 years

old must be accompanied by

an adult. All materials are

provided. LEGO bricks and

creations will remain in the

library after each program.

State Park: Wildlife

Safety Class —Tuesday,

Sept 16, 6 p.m. The wildlife

safety class will cover a range

of topics, from recognizing

wildlife hazards to learning

how to prevent and respond

to encounters with animals

like bears, wolves, and other

potentially dangerous wildlife.

These classes are beneficial

for outdoor workers, recre-

ationists and anyone who

spends time in areas where

wildlife may be present.

cussion — The Wedding Peo-

Master gardener applications being accepted

The Gilpin County CSU Ex-

tension office is now accepting

applications to join the Colo-

rado Master Gardener (CMG)

volunteer program. Expertise

isn’t necessary, but a passion

for gardening is essential.

The CMG program trains

volunteers in the science of

gardening via Green School,

an online certification pro-

gram spanning November

through March each year.

Taught by Extension spe-

cialists, coursework touches

on Colorado-specific topics

including botany, tree identi-

fication, irrigation, pest/weed

management and soils.

After completing Green

School, Master Gardener

(MG) apprentices are required

to complete 50 hours of vol-

unteer work within one year

or 60 hours over two years.

Volunteer opportunities vary

but can usually be adjusted to

match each volunteer’s inter-

ests and strengths. Apprentic-

es become Master Gardeners

after fulfilling the first-year

volunteer requirement, after

which the annual volunteer

hours decrease to 24.

There are currently four

MGs in Gilpin County. These

MGs host an annual plant

sale, maintain the demonstra-

tion garden at the Barn Build-

ing, answer questions from

residents, help teach classes,

write educational articles and

posts, and assist with rel-

evant CSU Extension events.

These efforts all support the

core mission of the Colorado

Master Gardener program: to

use horticulture to empower

gardeners, develop partner-

ships, and build stronger

communities.

The current application

window closes on Sept. 2.

Applications are completed

online and typically re-

quire less than an hour. For

residents who don’t want to

volunteer, but still want to

take the classes, the regular

Green School course is also

an option. Reduced registra-

tion fees and scholarships are

Homecoming change — There’s been a shift regarding

Gilpin High School’s homecoming events. Instead of the

annual event being held the weekend of Sept. 26-27 – as

originally planned – it will be pushed to the second week-

end in October.

The new schedule includes the homecoming parade on

the morning of Friday, Oct. 10. The football game between

the Eagles and visiting Front Range Academy will kick off

at 7 p.m. The weekend will wrap up with the homecoming

dance at the school on Saturday night, Oct. 11, at a time to

be announced.

Friday, Aug. 29 — High school volleyball at the West

Grand tournament in Kremmling. The Eagles will play

West Grand at 1 p.m. and Clear Creek at 2:45 p.m. on

Friday. On Saturday, the team will play Peyton at 9:30 a.m.

and Cedaredge at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30.

Saturday, Aug. 30 — High school football hosts St.

Mary’s of Colorado Springs, 6 p.m.

Tuesday, Sept. 2 — Middle school football hosts Byers,

4:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 3 — High school volleyball at Estes

Park, 4:30 p.m.

Thursday, Sept. 4 — Middle school volleyball at

Kiowa, beginning at 4 p.m. with the C-team match.

Friday, Sept. 5 — Teacher in-service day. This weekend

is a bye week for the high school football team.

Saturday, Sept. 6 — High school jayvee volleyball at

Strausburg tournament. Time TBA.

Tuesday, Sept. 9 — High school volleyball at Byers.

Times TBD.

Wednesday, Sept. 10 — Middle school football hosts

Clear Creek, 4:30 p.m.

Thursday, Sept. 11 — High school volleyball at

Lyons. Junior varsity begins at 4 p.m., followed by

varsity at 5.

Friday, Sept. 12 — High school football at Lake County

(Leadville), 7 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 13 — Middle school volleyball tourna-

ment at home, beginning at 10 a.m.

Construction started on the

first permanent home for the

Idaho Springs Police Depart-

ment on Aug. 25. W.E. O’Neil

Construction invited several

local dignitaries for a ceremo-

nial “first swing.” The new $3

million Police Station will be lo-

cated at 1744 Miner St., across

from City Hall in downtown

Idaho Springs, and signifies

a major investment in public

safety and civic infrastructure.

“This is more than a new

building, it’s a cornerstone

for our future,” said Idaho

Springs Mayor Chuck Har-

mon. “We’re building a per-

manent home for our police

officers just steps from City

Hall. This downtown loca-

tion puts public safety right at

the center of our community,

The project was made pos-

sible in part by a $1 million

Colorado Department of Local

Affairs (DOLA) Energy Im-

pact Assistance Fund (EIAF)

grant, involves the selective

demolition and remediation

of a 2,762-square-foot former

bank building, followed by a

1,089-square-foot addition.

The new 3,851-square-foot

facility will feature upgraded

mechanical, electrical and

plumbing systems, structural

improvements, new facades,

interior finishes, landscap-

ing, and fresh concrete and

asphalt paving.
