Gilpin volleyball routs Longmont Christian Warriors and Sheridan Rams

Plus MS Football action by Patty Unruh The Lady Eagles of Gilpin County High School put it on the line last week to win big over the Longmont Christian Warriors and the Sheridan Rams in home non-conference matches. The team sports a 7-2 record, 6-2 at home. They play Community Christian at home on Friday, October 2; middle school A team plays at 5:00 p.m., and the high school varsity at 6:00 p.m. Clash with Longmont Christian Gilpin’s varsity defeated Longmont Christian High School (LCHS) 3-0 on Friday, September 25, on the Eagles’ home court. Set scores were 25/22, 25/11, and 25/17. The game’s first set was never a sure thing till the last point was scored. The Lady Eagles and LCHS were closely matched until near the end of the exciting battle, when Gilpin pulled ahead to make the score 22-18. The Warriors kept fighting, but Gilpin finally won 25-22. The second set was never close, the Eagles having worn the Warriors down in the first set. It wasn’t long till Gilpin was ahead 6-1, and they kept a margin of at least 4 points until pulling ahead 16-8. LCHS managed 3 more points in the set before the Eagles closed it at 25-11. At first, it looked as though the third set would belong to LCHS, as they shot ahead to an early 4-point lead. Gilpin was not about to give up, battling back until the score was tied 5-5. The teams tied again at 6-6, and Gilpin began to work the score in their favor, widening the point margin until they were ahead 18-13. LCHS tried to catch up in the final moments, but the Eagles kept the lead, winning the set 25-17. Eagles’ coach Alexis Donaldson praised her team. “It was the game they’ve played the best from start to finish this season. There were not a lot of mental errors.” Lindsey James and Jada Gohdes topped the team in kills with 6 each, followed by Alex Martin with 5 and Alexis Kennedy with 4. Four serving aces were slammed by Martin. James, Gohdes, Cicely Lepro, and Sierra DeLeon also had one ace each. James had 3 solo blocks and Gohdes one. DeLeon netted honors in digs with 16, followed by Alexis Kennedy with 8. Lepro, Martin, and Aspen Nadeau also did well with 6 digs apiece. The team’s total was 49. DeLeon also boasted 13 ball handling assists. Leading in serving received success was Martin with 12 and Lepro with 10, while Nadeau contributed 6, A. Kennedy 4, Carlota Saez-Aymerich 2, and Breanna Kennedy 1. The junior varsity likewise enjoyed success over their competitors in two fast-paced sets: 25/21 and 25/15, for a 2-0 win. Limiting the Sheridan Rams The Gilpin varsity won over the Sheridan Rams 3-0 on Monday, September 21. Set scores were 25/8, 25/15, and 25/4. The leader in kills was Jada Gohdes with 9; teammates Alex Martin followed with 6 and Lindsey James with 4. DeLeon garnered 6 serving aces, and Gohdes mustered 2 solo blocks. Digs leader was Martin with 9, while Alexis Kennedy had 6 and DeLeon and Cicely Lepro came in with 4 each. DeLeon was tops in ball handling assists with 19. Serving received success was enjoyed by Lepro and Martin with 6 each, followed by Carlota Saez-Aymerich and Breanna Kennedy, each with 2. Middle School Football Results Gilpin Middle School’s football team was bested by the Lyons Lions in a home gridiron contest on Tuesday, September 22. Although Gilpin was disappointed in its bid, Eagle players distinguished themselves with four touchdowns and two 2-point conversions. Strong tackles and several runs with good yardage gains were also noted. The team hopes to advance yet on its 0-5 record. Mateo Maldanado was leading scorer for Gilpin in the Lyons game with three TDs. One was on defense, as Maldanado took the hand-off from the running back and returned the turnover 35 yards for a quick score. John Paul also scored, rushing for several yards to run in his first touchdown in his first ever football game. The team faced East Grand on September 23. John Paul scored both of two touchdowns, including one kickoff return that he ran 85 yards for the score. Coach Clinton Wenholz said, “All the boys are fighting hard, and it’s not for a lack of heart or effort. We are simply out matched this year by bigger, stronger, and more experienced teams. We have three games left in the season, and we will keep fighting and hopefully pull out a win.”
