Warm temperatures and blue skies brought an abundance of construction workers outside at Gilpin County School Monday. Construction of the new elementary and secondary wings is proceeding steadily. Roofs are being installed, windows are in place, and the large amount of space that will be available is now apparent. Construction is expected to be completed after the first of the year.
An incident occurred in Black Hawk early in November involving 15 to 20 juveniles and adults. As a result of the disturbance that involved guns and knives, summonses were issued to three adults and another adult was taken into custody for a $30,000 warrant out of Texas. Ronald F. Walters of Gilpin County was arrested by Black Hawk Marshal George Armbright for allegedly stabbing a juvenile and assaulting another adult as a result of a fight that occurred on Main Street in Black Hawk. Walters failed to appear in Gilpin County Court on Tuesday, but has been charged with assault in the second degree, assault in the third degree, felony menacing, criminal mischief and carrying a concealed weapon. Due to his failure to appear in court, a bench warrant was issued for his arrest. Due to the number of people involved, law enforcement officials from the Gilpin County Sheriff’s Department and the Central City Police Department served as backup and aided Armbright when the disturbance occurred. Bruce Hartman of the sheriff’s department suspected that the juveniles had been drinking. No written police reports on these incidents were available until this week, hence the delay in reporting them.
