Lake County Basketball Tournament at Leadville By George Snyder The Gilpin boys’ basketball team flew over a Friday loss to Monte Vista and swept past both Crested Butte and Lake County to take second place in the annual Lake County Basketball Tournament at Leadville last Saturday. After a tough, foul-marred 63-52 disappointment on Friday, the Eagles got their game together and socked the Crested Butte Titans 53-42, and the Lake County Panthers 43-27 before returning home late Saturday. Monte Vista Pirates Gilpin actually had a 1-point lead over the Monte Vista Pirates in the fourth quarter. Then the Eagles’ big rebounders--Chase Boulter, Nick Peterson, and Jonathan Ramsey—all fouled out within one minute. After that, the Pirates closed the show with 25 points to Gilpin’s 17. The final point difference did not truly reflect the competitiveness of the game. Gilpin was down only 38-35 at the end of the third quarter, but when the rebounders fouled out the game slipped away. Gilpin’s high scorers were Matt Immordino with 18 and Chase Boulter with 16. The Eagles did have more steals and fewer turnovers than Monte Vista did, but a 32% average from the free throw line, compared to the Pirates’ 75% did not help the Gilpin cause. Crested Butte Titans The Eagles showed no mercy to 2-A Crested Butte until the final quarter. The 1-3-1 full court press, employed by Gilpin, made the Titans so edgy that they trailed 44-29 at the end of the third quarter. Then Gilpin coach, Paul Hanson, put in his reserves and the Titans gave them some experience. Immordino again led the way with 20 points and Boulter canned 18. Free throw shooting improved slightly as the Eagles hit 5 of 12 attempts for 42%. Lake County Panthers The win over Lake County was especially satisfying, as the Eagles had never beaten the Panthers in this tournament. Also, it is a building year for the Panthers who have only one player over six feet tall. The Eagles have three players at 6’ 4 or better. That being the case, Gilpin jumped off to a 13-3 first quarter lead and never looked back. Once again, the press worked as it should and caused 21 turnovers. As usual, the leading scorers were Boulter and Immordino with 22 and 11 points respectively. Coach Hanson reports that of the 17 players attending the tournament, 14 were able to play in the games. Overall, it was a good experience for the players, and wins portend a good year for the Eagles if they can stay out of foul trouble. JV versus Nederland In JV action, Gilpin defeated Nederland 30-29 Wednesday at the Nederland gym. The Eagles will open their home season vs. West Grand at 4 p.m. Saturday, December 12 – come cheer on the team with courtside seats!
