Turning Back the Pages

By Roger Baker: One of the really gratifying things about working here at the library is the way in which people, lots of times people who don’t even regularly use the library, show their support by donating their old books to us. Last on the for example, we had almost 600 books donated, mostly paperbacks but a number of hardbacks as well. A few of the hardcovers were pretty current, like Herman Wouk’s new one, “Inside, Outside” and Erich (“Love Story”) Segal’s “The Class.” There were also a number of recent and classic books on psychology, some of which we kept to fill some of the holes in our collection and two ones of which we were able to sell to a student down in Denver. Already this month we’ve had nearly 200 books donated. The Howes, faithful as ever, have already brought in a dozen or so paperbacks, including several Louis L’Amour westerns in paperback, and Cindy Avram dropped off a box with 18 paperbacks and a hardcover Little Bear book for the children’s section. That’s why it’s gratifying too, to be able to use some of the library’s newfound “wealth” (well, compared to the old days, anyway) to try to keep up to date on most of the new hardcover best sellers that you might see at the bookstores. I don’t suppose we’ll ever have the budget to keep all of the bestsellers in stock all the time (after all, we’ve got two “Mammoth Hunters” now and they’re both checked out all of the time), but people who are accustomed to using libraries are resigned to not being able to get everything they want right when they want it. And if there’s something you’ve just got to have, I won’t be hurt if you go down to B. Dalton’s or Sachels’ and buy it. Of course, I wouldn’t mind if you gave it to the library when you’re done reading it either.
