A Denver tradition since 1906
by Dave Gibson
The National Western Stock Show has rolled into town again for its 111th consecutive year. From the opening parade where livestock is herded through the streets of Denver to its closing event, the U.S. Bank Pro Rodeo Finals at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 22nd, there is a lot to see and do. The riding, roping, and shooting contests demonstrate some of the skills practiced by historic cowboys and modern ranchers. Nine hundred vendors are present offering anything from a pair of cowboy boots to a John Deer tractor. Just to get in the mood and attain the proper look, a custom cowboy or cowgirl hat can be purchased that’s steamed to perfection. If you want to have your picture taken while sitting on a steer, you may. A petting zoo with sixty farmyard animals and pony rides will interest the kids as will events like the participatory Pedal Car Tractor Race and Stick Horse Race held at the Activity Pavilion. Of course there is all the olfactory-arousing delicious food that one could ever eat, plus a rodeo at the Events Center or Coliseum everyday.
