Beth Ensign, Jeff Lorenz, and Andy Rohrer are the lucky three Gilpin County students selected to represent Central City in the first student exchange program between Central City and Champagne Vigny, France this spring. The two communities are Sister Cities that hold the distinction of being the two smallest cities participating in the international program. Chosen on the basis of enthusiasm and participation in the Sister City association, as well as their academic accomplishments, the trio will leave Gilpin County on March 16. They will spend two weeks living with French host families in Champagne Vigny. Although the students know only a little French at this time, they plan to learn a bit more before they leave, possibly through the use of language tapes. In addition to an interest in seeing how other people live, the three are hoping to understand what the French perception of America is, Beth said last week. Beth is the daughter of Will and Sally Ensign of Missouri Lakes. Jeff is the son of Bill and Kay Lorenz of Black Hawk. Andy is the son of Lee Rohrer of mid-Gilpin County. The Central City Elks Lodge will host a fund-raiser for the Central City Sister City Organization January 21, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. The event will be an evening of bingo, held at the lodge, and the public at large is invited to attend. Beth, Jeff, and Andy will be honored at the onset of the festivities at 8 p.m.
Museum Improvements, by Bonnie Merchant: Things are moving at the Gilpin County Historical Society Museum. After a long period of time with little to no change in the displays at the museum, the Board of Directors is taking at least one Saturday every month, and some are taking time on other Saturdays, to affect much needed re-arrangement. The move began with the Board re-evaluating its own structure and commitment. Each member has now accepted a specific assignment, plus the responsibility of recruiting a committee from the membership or the community at large, to assist in completing individual assignments. If Gilpin County residents would like to volunteer to help with the museum, or other charges of the Historical Society, please contact Bonnie Merchant of Patsy Ellis. A series of notes from the president of the Historical Society will appear in the Register-Call to update the membership and the public of progress at the museum.
