A full-sized handmade quilt is being raffled by the Gilpin County Seniors to help pay for a desperately needed new van to transport seniors in the county and on shopping trips and errands. Made in 1964 by Nelle Anderle, who donated the quilt to the seniors, it features the Ox Yoke or Old Pioneer patchwork pattern. Valued at several hundred dollars, the quilt will be raffled off on Memorial Day. Tickets cost only $2.00 each or three for $5.00. Ticket sales have been brisk, reports Jean Lomax. The group’s goal is to raise the remaining $800 needed to replace their old van with a newer model. Tickets are available from Mary Meyers, Neil and Mary Dolezal, Nevada Smith, and may others active in the Gilpin Seniors. A phone call to Esther Campbell will also assure you of obtaining raffle tickets. The lucky person who wins the quilt will have a family heirloom to treasure for generations.
February 10 was a good day for the Gilpin Eagles Wrestling Team when they earned third place team standing in the district after a tournament at Wiggins. Only eight and a half points stood between the Eagles and a first place championship. An injury earlier in the week kept Eagle Tony Kervitsky from competing in Wiggins. It is believed he would have contributed at least 12 points to the team’s score had he been able to participate. The result of the tournament is that five Eagles qualified to compete in the state wrestling tournament, which began February 16, and will continue through the 18th, at McNichols Arena. Qualifying for the state meet are Victor Sanchez, 103 pounds, who took second at Wiggins; Robert Guiney, second place winner at 140 pounds; Brook Anderson, 152 pound second place winner; 160 pound Todd Crawley, who placed second; and heavyweight Chuck White, who earned the distinction of being the first Gilpin County wrestler to come home a district champ. Individual rankings at Wiggins for the remaining Gilpin wrestlers are: John Flesher, second place, after four outs which resulted in two wins, including a win against the number one seeded wrestler, and third place wins for Chris Staub, Fred Weber, Ian Blackburn, and Matt Roberts. Flesher and Blackburn came within inches of qualifying for the state meet when they each put their opponents flat on the mat. Unfortunately, they were unable to finish off their competition.
