Keeping the lights on for Gilpin Arts

Annual fundraiser was both fun and successful

By David Josselyn

The Gilpin County Arts Association is entering its 73rd year and promotes the longest, continuous juried art show in the State each spring. Their historically glorious art gallery located in Washington Hall has been without heat up until 2018 when a heating system was installed in cooperation with the City of Central and several generous donors. Now the Association is adapting to a year-round schedule with the challenging of funding the cost of year-round utilities. On October 12, they held their annual fundraiser to help pay for the year-round costs. Gallery Manager Michele Scarduzio has done incredible work juggling the artists, art, and media for the gallery bringing together professional and highly-skilled shows. Together, with the Art Board and her assistant manager, Aileen Tamai, the association continues to produce excellent exhibits and events that enrich the community. The fundraiser added elements of fun with a wall of wine, silent auction, and mystery grab bags. The grab bags are valued at $50 or more and sold at half the price. For a $20 donation, you got to dip your hand into the working sluice basin and draw a rock with a number on it. Each number corresponds to a bottle of wine which goes home with the lucky number drawn. The silent auction had many excellent pieces of art and meals at fine dining establishments in Black Hawk.
