Student Art Show at Washington Hall Gallery
By Esmee Halsted
The Gilpin County School Art Department recently hosted a student art show at the Washington Hall Gallery in Central City. Titled “Roses Are Red, But Not Always,” the installation project was the brainchild of visiting artist Joleen Sheldon. The exhibit featured homemade clay roses by elementary and middle school art students. In honor ofValentine’s Day, the exhibit opened on February 15th with a reception from 1:00-3:00 pm. The students worked on the projects starting in January. Mr. Halsted and artist Joleen showed them how to create their masterpieces. “Collaboration was the key to making this assignment successful. Joleen brought her special artistic skills to the process. Students rolled out thin slabs and pressed out various size discs. They were then overlapped and rolled to create individual clay roses. “Middle school students added sepal, stems and leaves to create a frieze,” explained Mr. Halsted.
