In the spring of 1868, my great-grandfather, James Willis, left his family in Michigan to travel to Central City, Colorado to mine for gold. Great-grandfather worked in the copper mines of Michigan to support my great-grandmother, Mary Ann Shaffer, their seven children, and my great-great-grandmother.
