Neighboring Boulder using drones

to help reduce car thefts

THANK YOU: I’d like to launch today’s episode

with a shout-out to the loyal readers who continue

to follow this frequent column about the emergence

of drones in our everyday lives.

Last month, the Colorado Press Association’s

annual Better Newspapers Contest presented this

ongoing “Age of Drones” series with its third con-

secutive award for “Best Serious Column Writing.”

It’s easy to imagine drones being used in distant

locations to deliver packages, spray fertilizer on

fields, or drop “dragon balls” to control wildfires.

However, just a short drive from Gilpin County,

drones are already making a significant difference.

Take Boulder, Colorado as an example.

recent posted this item that merited attention.

“Motor vehicle thefts are down in Boulder 30

percent year to date compared to 2024, and it’s due

to the hard work of our uniformed and plainclothes

teams but also due in part to the investments we’ve

made in technology,” the chief wrote.

A repeat offender decided to bring a stolen truck

to Boulder, park it, and fall asleep. Our Automated

License Plate Readers alerted officers, and our new

drone team was activated once the vehicle was

located. The drone was able to clearly capture the

suspect dropping the keys out of the open door onto

the ground. An undercover officer walked by and

snagged the keys, effectively trapping the suspect

and preventing him from fleeing in the truck.”

Drone photos showed what happened after the

suspect climbed out the rear window and onto the

hood. He kindly pointed at the drone before fleeing

on foot, but he didn’t get far before being followed

by the drone and quick-footed officers. “This combi-

nation of proactive police work and technology is a

game changer,” he added.

Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office has started testing

its new drones for its patrol division. While places

like Boulder, Arvada, and other jurisdictions often

use drones to get an “eye in the sky” on develop-

ing situations, rural Gilpin doesn’t usually have the

same high-profile crimes. Still, these flying tools are

expected to help Gilpin deputies with a variety of po-

tentially dangerous cases moving forward.

West Nile virus cases

increased in several

counties in Utah this

summer, prompting of-

ficials to step up efforts

to protect people and

vulnerable animals. At

the Salt Lake Mosquito

workers are using inno-

vative, high-tech tools to combat the pests. Drones

are taking to the skies to fight the deadly airborne

insect — the mosquito — that can carry West Nile

virus.

Underneath the bodies of the drones, there are

small storage tanks filled with mosquito insecticide.

These tanks are similar to those used on agricultural

drones, which are designed to water crops, spray

fertilizer, or distribute plant seeds across farmland.

Some of the Utah drones are deployed to local ponds

to spray where mosquitoes live and breed.

There are an estimated 3,600 species of mosqui-

toes worldwide, dating back to the time when dino-

saurs roamed the earth. While many spe-

cies are mainly a nuisance to the people

and animals they bite, those carrying the

West Nile virus can cause illness in people

who are bitten.

No flying deliveries yet

Large retailers aren’t prepared yet to

deliver a package or a fresh cup of hot cof-

fee to your Gilpin County home – at least,

not yet.

However, Google has announced that

its Wing drone delivery system – owned

by Google parent Alphabet – continues to

expand its operations in several states.

Google uses fixed-wing drones, which

look like large model airplanes. These

small aircraft fly at about 150 feet high

and reach speeds of up to 65 miles per

hour. They are around four feet long and

have a wingspan of nearly five feet. The

drones rest at charging stations called

nests. When an order is received, the

drone travels to the retail store and low-

ers a tether. An employee on the ground

attaches the package to the tether. The

cord is then reeled in, and the drone flies

to its destination, where it lowers the

tethered package to the ground.

Wing partnered with Walmart in

August 2023 and DoorDash in December 2024 to

deliver to customers near its nests. The company

said the average flight time from stores to homes

has been about 3 minutes and 24 seconds.

Although still unavailable in Colorado, Wing’s

drones have completed more than 400,000 deliver-

ies across the US, Europe, and Australia. It’s easy to

imagine how helpful it would be for someone in Gil-

pin County to order from a Walmart or supermarket

in another area—and have it delivered to their home

later that same day.
