county, he purchased a

In its 2025 budget, the

county planned to re-

ceive a $291,191 grant

to purchase and deploy

additional sensors. Whit-

tington also worked to

secure a grant to purchase

the county’s first drone,

which could assist Gilpin

in certain emergencies.

At Jeffco, Whittington

has been credited for

developing a new Emer-

gency Operations Center,

implementing an opera-

tional coordination and

program during emergen-

cies and managing the

Quarry Fire evacuation

resident re-entry plan.

Early last year, Gilpin

hired former Clear Creek

Lewis to replace Whit-

tington. However, after

several months in the

position, she resigned in

October. Since then, the

county has been working

to hire another Emergen-

cy Manager.

Girls’ basketball—The Gilpin

Eagles continued their winning streak

by securing road wins at Skyview

Academy and Lyons last week. The

squad defeated Skyview Academy,

44-26, on Feb. 11 and followed with a

42-21 victory at Lyons on Feb. 13.

The team entered the current week

with a six-game winning streak and

was No. 2 in league play. Overall, Gil-

pin is 14-4, including a 9-1 mark in the

Class 3A/2A/1A Mile High League.

Thursday, Feb. 20—Middle

school wresting at Summit Middle

School in Frisco, 3:30 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 21—High school

basketball hosts Dawson. Girls’ varsity

begins at 5 p.m., followed by boys’

varsity at 6:30 p.m. Senior recognition

will be held between games.

Saturday, Feb. 22—Middle

school wresting at Bennett, 9:30 a.m.

High school “Snowcoming” game

night at Gilpin High School.

Week of Feb. 24-March 1

Monday, Feb. 24—Middle school

girls’ basketball at Bennett. The C-

team plays at 4 p.m. and the A-game

at 5:30 p.m.

Tuesday, Feb. 25—High school

girls’ and boys’ basketball will play

away games. Opponents and times are

to be announced.

Wednesday, Feb. 26—Middle

school girls’ basketball hosts Clear

Creek. The C-team takes to the court

at 4:15 p.m., followed by B-game at 5

and the A-team at 6 p.m.

Thursday, Feb. 27—High school

boys’ basketball will play on the road.
