COMBA helps with trails cleanup

(COMBA) plan to assist

with several events in Black

Hawk and Idaho Springs

this weekend. Some will

participate in a “Trailfest”

at Black Hawk’s Maryland

Mountain outdoor recre-

ation area, while others will

lend a hand for the clean-up

day in Idaho Springs.

The Trailfest is scheduled

for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sat-

urday, May 17, at Maryland

Mountain Park, located

north of Highway 119 in

Black Hawk.

local companies to educate

its volunteers and mem-

bers about building trails.

Representatives from Orbea

Cycles will provide free

bike demonstrations and

transport workers from the

Hidden Treasure Trailhead

parking lot to the worksite

at the trails.

After the event, food from

Smokin Yards and Odell

Brewing will be available.

Door prizes will also be an-

nounced at the event, which

is limited to 20 people. To

In Idaho Springs, COMBA

members plan to participate

in the Clear Creek Rotary

Club’s service day, which be-

gins at 9 a.m. Volunteers will

gather at the former City-

Wide Bank, located at 1744

Miners St., to pick up orange

clean-up bags. The bags are

also available this week at City

Hall. Once the bags are full,

they can be dropped off at the

former bank site.

COMBA said its members

plan to help with Rotary’s

“Epic Day of Service” to dem-

onstrate their commitment to

community service. Currently,

COMBA’s Trek Trails at

Virginia Canyon Park remain

closed, but “we’re wanting

to support in other ways and

help prepare this small town

for the big ride season ahead.

We’re needing volunteers

who can spare a few hours to

clean up the area east of town,

specifically the east end of the

greenway and the bike paths.

We’ll supply the trash bags,

and bring your bike as an easy

way to get about our area,” a

COMBA spokesperson said.

During the past five years,

COMBA, a non-profit associa-

tion comprised of mountain

bikers from the surrounding

region and Denver’s Front

Range, has contributed to the

development of Black Hawk’s

Maryland Mountain trail sys-

tem and, more recently, to the

creation of the Trek Trails at

Virginia Canyon Park, which

overlooks Idaho Springs.

COMBA has also worked

with Miners Point Ventures,

which is developing the

Mighty Argo Cable Car Ridge

project, currently under

construction in Idaho Springs.

The cable-car ride, when

completed in early 2026, will

transport passengers from

near the old Argo Mine to a

new outdoor entertainment

venue about 1.2 miles up the

hill. In the meantime, COM-

BA has been building several

new trails that will connect

near the upper terminal of the

gondola project.

morial Day weekend, to honor those who have given their

lives for the Country.

• Saturday, June 7 — Opening day for the Gilpin Arts So-

ciety’s 78th annual Juried Arts Show at 5 p.m. in Washington

Hall, Central City.

• Thursday, June 12 — History Colorado will host a pro-

gram about Gilpin County’s Lincoln Hills’ historic past from

5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at its location, 1200 Broadway, Denver.

RSPVs are recommended.

• Saturday, June 14 — Madame Lou Bunch Day in Central

st annual event includes bed races on Main Street,

live music, performances by the Backroom Cabaret dancers

and other activities. The day will conclude with the Miners

and Madams Ball.

• Saturday, June 21 — Central City Opera’s annual Yellow

Rose Ball. This 90-year-old tradition occurs at the opera

• Sunday, June 22 — The annual Family Fun Fishing Clinic

County’s 32nd annual fair on the grounds of Gilpin Com-

munity Center. A parade to kick off the annual activity is

planned to travel through Central City and Black Hawk on

Friday morning, July 11.

• Saturday, August 23 — The “Great Central City Beerfest”

will return to Main Street.

• Saturday, August 23 — Gilpin Historical Society will

conduct its annual Cemetery Crawl in one of the cemeteries

on the hill above downtown Central City.

• Saturday, Aug. 30 — Labor Day weekend begins.

• Monday, Sept. 1 — Labor Day holiday.

• Saturday, Sept. 6 — The second annual First Responders

Day and “Buck for the Badge” rodeo are planned for the Gilpin

County Fairgrounds.
