Community Food Shares at the Gilpin Community Center
By Arwen Ek
The Holistic Homestead is a nonprofit that has been helping Gilpin get healthy since 2012. The Homestead does a lot in the community – from workshops like Hands On Health for Kids! to programs like coordinating the Used Durable Medical Equipment lending closets along the Peak to Peak. We surveyed Gilpin residents asking what impacts your health and wellness the most, and folks overwhelmingly responded that lack of access to healthy food was a major barrier to achieving and maintaining health in our community. Since then, the Homestead has taken on the task of bringing healthy food to Gilpin County through our twice monthly Community Food Shares and Farmers Market. These markets are building the momentum to eventually open a full-time grocery store at the Professional Building (972 Golden Gate Canyon Rd.) where we will be stocking healthy kitchen staples like fresh, organic produce, a variety of meat and dairy products, and bulk items – as well as having a small cafe with soups, sandwiches, a few tables and wi-fi!
