Timberline endorsement
I’ve lived in Colorado for many decades
and don’t recall as many fires occurring in
the past decades. We seem to have weekly
fires due to drought conditions and aging
forests. The beetles did a number on the for –
ests, and we also have more outdoor usage
in the forests than ever before with careless
campfires.
Climate change is occurring for various
reasons, and the weather has become more
violent. The media has also expanded coverage
with national news covering disasters across
America. In the old days, it would be local
news, TV , radio and newspapers.
In Gilpin County, we are blessed with
beautiful forests surrounding our homes and
cities. We are very subject to fires and blessed
to have a great Timberline Fire Protection
District.
The Fritz Peak Observatory building was
acquired from the Federal government at no
cost to the district and Gilpin taxpayers, which
I recently toured. It is being renovated and can
add numerous benefits to the district. The new
facility will serve as Timberline’s administra-
tive headquarters. Kudos to the board for this
acquisition and the 24/7 services rendered to
district residents.
The three incumbent board members are
John Bushey, Mary Kate McKenna, and Rick
Wenzel.
The Weekly Register-Call heartily endorses
their re-election and commends them for their
effective and diligent work in the management
of Timberline.
The election is Tuesday, May 2, and voters
must vote in person from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. at
Timberline Station No. 5. 14908 Highway 119,
near Taggert’s gas station. A state identifica-
tion is required to vote in the election, showing
local residency. Black Hawk and Central City
residents cannot vote in the Timberline elec-
tion unless they own property in the TPFD
service area.
Show your appreciation to these candidates
by voting for their re-election. We’re fortu-
nate to have these dedicated board members
and the great Timberline fire prevention team.
Timberline election
Eligible Gilpin County voters
can cast ballots for the Tim-
berline Fire Protection District
Board of Directors on Tuesday,
May 2. The in-person voting
will occur from 7 a.m. until 7
p.m. at TPFD Station No. 5,
14908 Highway 119 (next to
Taggert’s gas station). Those
voting will be required to fur-
nish identification, which will
be used to authenticate their eli-
gibility based on state records.
Gilpin graduation
Graduation day is scheduled
for Gilpin County High School
seniors for Saturday, May 20, at
the high school.
School Fine arts
The spring fine arts festivals
will take place next week at the

tary students will have their

On May 9 at 6:30 p.m., arts by
lower elementary and kinder-
garten students will be featured.

“The City does its best to
make this a fun day for all,”
said Mayor David Spellman.
“The goal is to return the com-
munity to its natural beauty
before the Founders Day cel-
ebration on June 3 and 4.
The check-in for clean-up
day will be from 8 until 9 a.m.
at Crook’s Palace, with a free,
light breakfast. A group photo
will be taken at 9 a.m., followed
by city-wide cleaning and litter
pickup. The volunteers will
wrap up the morning with a free
lunch at JKQ BBQ at Crook’s
Palace, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Water, snacks, trash bags
and supplies will be given to
volunteers to help them with the
clean-up work. Participants can
park in the St. Charles Carriage
House Parking Garage, which
is next to the Crook’s Palace
parking lot.
Central City’s annual clean-
up day will be from 9:30 a.m.
until 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May
18. V olunteers will assemble
at the Big T Lot across from
