Versus Highland Huskies and Heritage Christian By Gary King The Eagles boy and girls’ varsities played the Highland Huskies last Tuesday evening February 4 th . Both evening games were played on the Huskies home court in Ault, Colorado. Eagles boy’s surrender game to number 2 ranked Highland Huskies Highland’s boys’ varsity came into the game ranked 2 in the League and with stats narrowly akin to the #1 ranked Denver Christian. The Eagles were still without key starter Nolan Lindberg who has been inactive with an injured ankle. The Huskies initiated the 1 st quarter scoring with a 3-point field goal. The Eagles’ Blake Boulter (25) responded with a 2-point field goal after which the Huskies went into a scoring streak of 13 points with a series of 2 and 3-point field goals. During the remainder of the quarter the Eagles Boulter (25) and Trey Lindberg (3) each completed 3-point field goals ending the period with 10 points for the Eagles. The Huskies finished the quarter with another 5 points lifting their score to 21. The Eagles scored 14 points in the 2 nd quarter with a 3-point field goal and 2 free throws by Boulter (25), 4 free throws and a 2-point field goal by Stephen King (4) and a 3-point field goal by Lindberg (3) making the Eagles cumulative score 24 points. The Huskies on the other hand scored 26 points boosting their game score to 47 points. In the 3 rd quarter the Eagles scored only 4 points with a 2-point field goal each by Boulter (25) and Lindberg (3). The Huskies scored with 14 2-point field goals, 4 3-pointers and a free throw. The 3 rd quarter score ended at 28-88 Huskies. Trey Lindberg (3) and Stephen King (4) scored 4 points in the 4 th quarter with one 2-point field goal each. The Huskies scored 8 points in the period with a mix of 2-pointers and free throws. The final tally displayed Eagles 32 to the Huskies 96. Lady Eagles soar to victory over the Highland Huskies The Huskies opened the scoring with 3 points via a field goal and a free throw. The Eagles responded by preventing the Huskies from scoring any further points during the 1 st quarter and placing 11 points of their own on the board. Eagles’ contributors were Samantha Smith (2) with a 3-point field goal, Camryn Ganz (22) with a 3-pointer and a free throw and Jessica Wilhelm (30) with 2 2-point field goals. The quarter ended with a score of 11-3 Eagles. In the 2 nd quarter the Eagles held the Huskies to only 2 free throws for the period. Ganz and Wilhelm each completed a 2-point field goal and Skyley Ramsey (12) sunk 2 free throws adding 6 more points to the Eagles count. Half time ended with the Eagles up by 12 points at 17-5. The Eagles added just 5 points to their tally during the 3 rd quarter but still held the Huskies to merely 3 points via a field goal and a free throw. The Eagles’ points were delivered by Alicia Johnson (20) with a 3-point field goal and Wilhelm (30) with a 2-point field goal. The 3 rd period ended on a score of 22-8 Eagles. The Huskies scored 3 points in the final quarter, while the Eagles scored only 2 points. Wilhelm (30) scored the entirety of the Eagles points throughout the period with a single 2-point field goal while the Huskies scored the sum of their points with a single 3-point field goal. The final game score displayed the Eagles winning by 13 points at 24-11. Gilpin Eagles vs Heritage Christian High School Eagles The Gilpin County varsity boy and girls’ basketball teams both lost in conference games played against Heritage Christian of Fort Collins, CO on Saturday, February 8 th . The games were played in the evening on Gilpin’s home court. Gilpin Eagles boys endure loss to Heritage Christian Eagles Gilpin’s Trey Lindberg (3) completed the first score of the game with a 3-point field goal that was followed by 3 Heritage 2-point field goals. Stephen King (4) and Lindberg (3) came back with another 3-point field goal each while Heritage completed another 2-pointer yielding a score of 9-8 Gilpin. Through the rest of the quarter King (4) contributed with 2 2-point field goals while Lindberg (3) and Blake Boulter (25) each made a 2-point field goal. During the same part of the period Heritage scored 12 points ending the quarter with Gilpin down by 3 at 17-20. The 2 nd and 3 rd quarters went poorly for Gilpin. In the 2 nd quarter Gilpin scored 9 points to Heritage’s 29. Gilpin’s points came from King (4) with 3 2-point field goals and a free throw and by Boulter (25) with a 2-point field goal ending the quarter with a score of 26-49 Heritage. Heritage scored 15 points in the 3 rd quarter while Gilpin added only 5 points. The points for Gilpin came from Boulter (25) with a 3-point field goal and King (4) with a 2 pointer. The quarter concluded with Heritage leading on a score of 31-64. Gilpin actually outscored Heritage by 7 points in the 4 th quarter, but it was insufficient to make up Gilpin’s 33-point deficit coming into the period. During the final quarter Heritage scored 17 points. Gilpin’s 4 th quarter tally was boosted by Boulter (25) with 4 2-point field goals, 1 3-pointer and a free throw; King (4) with 2 3-pointers and a free throw and Lindberg (3) with single 3-point and 2-point field goals. The game concluded with Gilpin declaring 55 points to Heritage’s 81. Gilpin’s point leaders were Stephen King (4) with 23 points followed by Blake Boulter (25) with 19 points. Boulter (25) led in rebounds with 13 followed by Triston DiPasquale (15) with 5. The Gilpin Lady Eagles dealt a loss by the Heritage Christian Eagles In the 1 st quarter Gilpin was able to hold Heritage to 7 points, however, Gilpin scored only 4 points. Gilpin’s Nicole Adams (33) and Camryn Ganz (22) completed 1 2-point field goal each ending the quarter at 4-7 in favor of Heritage Christian. Gilpin chalked up 10 points in the 2 nd quarter while Heritage secured 17 points. Contributing to Gilpin’s score were Ganz (22) and Skyley Ramsey (12) each with a 2-point field goal along with Samantha Smith (2) and Sarah Trujillo (5) each of whom completed a 3-point field goal. At half time the scoreboard displayed Gilpin 14 to Heritage 24. Gilpin’s Lady Eagles battled hard in the 3 rd period to make a comeback from their half time deficit of 10 points. However, Gilpin was only able to match Heritage with each team scoring 15 points during the quarter. Gilpin’s points were produced by Jessica Wilhelm (30) with 2 2-point field goals and a 3-pointer, Ramsey (12) with a 2-point field goal, Alicia Johnson and Ganz (22) with 1 3-pointer each. The period ended with Gilpin still down by 10 points on a score of 29-39 Heritage added another 10 points to Gilpin’s deficit during the 4 th quarter. Heritage scored 16 points during the quarter with 6 2-point field goals and 4 free throws. Gilpin increased its tally by 6 points during the final period with 1 2-point field goal each by Lena Warren (11) and Alicia Johnson (20) along with 2 free throws from Ganz (22). The game ended with a final score of Eagles 35 to Heritage 55.
