Gilpin Eagles Boys’ and Girls’ Varsity Basketball

Teams Played 2 League and 1 Non-League Games Last Week By Gary King The Gilpin boys’ varsity entered last week’s games with an overall record of 2 wins and 5 losses and a 0-1 record in League competition. The boys exited the week with a 0-3 League record and 2-8 overall. Gilpin’s Lady Eagles began last week’s games with a wins to lossesrecord of 4-3 overall and 0-1 in League play. Departing last week’s games the girl’s possessed 6-4 overall and 2-1 League records. Gilpin Eagles vs Lyons Lions The Eagles boy and girls’ varsity teams played an away game last Tuesday, January the 14 th in Lyons, Colorado vs the Lyons Lions. The game marked the 2 nd League game the Eagles have played this season. Eagle’s boys’ varsity topped by the Lyons Lions The game opened with the tipoff going to the Lions. On the Eagle’s 1 st possession Nolan Lindberg (24) opened the scoring with a 2-point layup. The Lions responded with 2-point and 3-point field goals making the score 2-5 Lions. The Eagles came back with a 2-point field goal and a 1-point free throw from Stephen King (4) followed by a 3-point field goal by Lindberg (24) and a 2-point field goal from Blake Boulter (25) putting the Eagles ahead at 10-5. The Lions continued to trail the Eagles until mid-3 rd quarter. The Lions made the final score of the period with a 3-pointer ending the period at 10-8 Eagles. The 2 nd quarter scoring began with a Lion 1-point free throw after the Eagles fouled a Lion shooter putting the Lions within 1 point of the Eagles at 10-9. Trey Lindberg (24) countered with a 3-point field goal followed by a Boulter (25) 3-pointer increasing the Eagles lead to 8 points on a score of 19-11. The Lions chalked up 4 points in successive free throws resulting from an Eagles technical foul. King (4) added 2 more points in free throws subsequent to a Lion’s shooting foul. The quarter ended with a Lion’s free throw and a 2-point field goal ending the half at Eagles 21 to the Lions 18. The Lions commenced the 3 rd quarter tally with a 2-point field goal to trail by 1 point. The Eagle’s King (4) replied with 1 of 2 free throws, and a fast break layup to place the Eagles up by 4 points. The Lions reacted with 3-point and 2-point field goals to lead the Eagles for the first time since early in the game. The Lions made only 2 more points in the quarter with a field goal while the Eagles Lindberg (24) completed a 2-point field goal and King (4) made a free throw to tie the game. Trey Lindberg polished off the quarter with a reverse layup to put the Eagles up by 2 points on a score of 29-27. The Lions opened the 4 th quarter by tying the score at 29-29 with a 2-point field goal. The Eagles Boulter (25) drew the Eagles ahead again with a 3-point shot. The Lions responded by tying the score again with a 2-point field goal and a free throw. The Eagles jumped ahead again, at 34-32, with a King (4) 2-point field goal. The Eagle’s lost one of their starters Jimmy Immordino (13) when he fouled out midway through the period. The Lions came back with 2 field goals to skip ahead by 2 points. Boulter (25) and Lindberg (24) both completed 2-point field goals while the Lions responded with a 3-pointer putting the Lions up by 1 at 40-41. With seconds left in the game King (4) was ejected from the game with 5 fouls. With the Lions stalling for time the Eagles fouled on expectation of missed free throws and turnovers. Consequently, the Lions were able to sink 4 free throws while the Eagles were merely able to respond with a 3-point shot by Trey Lindberg (3). The game ended with a score of Eagles 43 to the Lions 45. Nolan Lindberg (24) led the Eagles in scoring with14 points followed by Stephen King (4) with 11 points. Trey Lindberg (3), Nolan Lindberg (24), Blake Boulter (25) each had 2 3-point field goals. Boulter (25) led the team with 10 rebounds followed by Lindberg (24) with 7 rebounds. Lady Eagles soar over the Lyons Lions The Lady Eagles opened quarter 1 with an immediate 2-point field goal by Jessica Wilhelm (30) which she followed up shortly with a 1-point free throw. The Lions responded with a free throw for 1 point and two field goals for a total of 5 to the Eagles 3. The Eagles held the Lions scoreless for the rest of the quarter while adding 6 points to their own score with 2 2-point field goals by Wilhelm (30) and one field goal from Skyley Ramsey (12). The period ended with the Eagles 9 to the Lions 5. Second quarter scoring began with an Eagle 3-pointer by Abigail Smith (1) and a free throw by Samantha Smith (2). The Lions countered with their own 3-point field goal. Smith (2) was fouled while shooting and subsequently completed 2 free throws making the score 15-8 Eagles. In the next 3 minutes the Lions sunk 2 2-point field goals to the Eagles 1 point from a Wilhelm (30) free throw. With approximately 30 seconds left on the time clock, Skyley Ramsey (12) closed out the scoring for the quarter with a 2-point field goal producing a score of 18-12 Eagles. Scoring was scant in the 3 rd period with only 3 points scored by each team. The Lions scored first with a free throw. The Eagle’s Camryn Ganz (22) responded with a 2-point field goal that was followed by a Lion’s 2-point field goal. Ramsey (12) bagged the final point in the quarter with a free throw making the score of 21-15 in favor of the Eagles. The Eagles ruled the 4 th quarter beginning with an Alicia Johnson (20) field goal for 2 points. The Lions scored 4 points with 2 field goals that were followed by an Eagles free throw and a 2-point field goal by Ganz (22) along with 2 free throws by Ramsey (12) increasing the Eagles lead to 28-19. The Lions final points in the game were obtained via 2 free throws with 3:29 left on the game clock. During the final minute-and-a-half of the period the Eagle’s secured 5 free throws, 2 by Ramsey (12), 2 by Ganz (22) and another 1 by Smith (2). The final score was Eagles 33 to the Lyons 21. Gilpin Eagles vs Front Range Christian Falcons On Friday, January the 17 th the Eagles varsity teams played another away game against the Front Range Christian Falcons. This was the 3 rd League competition for the Eagles in the current season’s play. Front Range Christian surpasses the Eagles boys The Eagles boys’ varsity led the Falcons through the first 3 quarters of the game. Despite losing three starters to fouls in the final quarter, the team mounted a gallant effort but was destined to lose by only 2 points. The tipoff went to the Falcons who turned over the ball on an offensive foul when Stephen King (2) took advantage to begin the scoring for the game with a field goal that was followed shortly by a Blake Boulter (25) field goal marking the first 4 points on the scoreboard. The Falcons were fouled on a shot and made 1 of 2 free throws. King (4) followed up with 2 free throws and a 3-point field goal. The Falcons finished the quarter with 2 2-point field goals and a free throw to make a score of Eagles 9 to the Falcons 6. The first half of the 2 nd quarter saw the two teams alternate putting points on the board with the Falcons scoring 4 field goals for 8 points and the Eagles Nolan Lindberg (24) scoring 4 points with 2 free throws and a field goal and Boulter (25) chalking up a 2-point field goal. With 3:32 left on the period clock the scoreboard displayed 15-14 Eagles. With about 3 minutes left in the half Boulter (25) bagged a 3-point field goal trailed by 2 King (4) free throws from two separate Falcon shooting fouls. The half ended with another Falcon 2-point shot and finished with a Boulter (25) 3-point field goal. The Falcons opened the 2 nd half with 2 2-point field goals and a 3-point field goal. The Eagles responded with a Trey Lindberg (3) 3-pointer and a King 2-point field goal. The Falcons scored 4 points with 2 2-pointers after which the Eagles scored 3 points with a field goal and a free throw by King (4). With less than 2 minutes left in the period, the Falcons completed a 3-point shot while the Eagles Jimmy Immordino (13) made a 2-point field goal giving the Eagles 4 point lead ending the 3 rd quarter at 34-30 Eagles. Within the 1 st minute of the 4 th quarter the Falcons were within 1 point of the Eagles via a 2-point field goal and a free throw. Before the Eagles made any points in the quarter the Falcons went on to score 2 more free throws and a field goal making the score 34 Eagles to 37 Falcons. Early in the period, the Eagles lost starter Jimmy Immordino (13) when he fouled out. In the first half of the period the Eagles lost Lindberg (24) also a key player when he fouled out. The Eagles finally responded with 3 free throws marking 2 from Boulter (25) and 1 from King (4) and a 2-point completion from Boulter as the Falcons secured 1 point with a free throw presenting an Eagles deficit of 1 point at 39-40. In the next minute the Falcons put up 3 points with a field goal and a free throw. With 2 minutes left in the game the Boulter (4) completed 1 free throw as King (4) completed 3 free throws and a field goal for an add 6 points to the Eagles tally while the Falcons furthered their tally with 2 2-point field goals and 2 free throws. With just less than a minute left in the game the score stood at 45-49 Falcons. With 24 seconds left another Eagle’s starter, King (4), fouled out resulting in a Falcons 1 point free throw. In spite of a valiant comeback effort and a Boulter (4) 3-point field goal in the last few seconds of the game the Eagles came up 2 points shy with a final score of 48 to 50. Lady Eagles Triumph over Front Range Christian The Lady Eagles came out strong in the 1 st quarter first scoring with a 3-point field goal by Abigail Smith (1). The Falcons countered with a free throw and a 2-point field goal for their only points of the quarter. The Eagles finished the quarter with contributions of 3 points from Alicia Johnson (20), 2 points from Samantha Smith (2), 2 points from Tommie DiMauro (13) and 2 points from Camryn Ganz (22) for a score of 13-3 Eagles. The Eagles started the 2 nd quarter with 2 2-point field goals one each by Abigail Smith (1) and Alicia Johnson (20). The Falcons proceeded to score with a 2-point field goal followed by an Eagles 2 points on a fast break layup by Camryn Ganz (22). The Falcons added only 2 more free throw points for the remainder of the quarter. The Eagles completed the half with 1 free throw point from Ganz (22) and a free throw point from Smith (1) making the half-time score Eagles 21 to the Falcons 7. The Falcons outscored the Eagles by just one point in the 3 rd quarter, which hardly dented the Eagles 14 point lead going into the quarter. The Eagles started the period scoring with a 2-point layup by Jessica Wilhelm (30) followed by 2 successful Falcon free throws. Alicia Johnson (20) landed a 2-point field goal followed by a Falcon field goal for 2. Lena Warren (11) added the Eagle’s final 2 points of the 3 rd quarter with a field goal. The quarter ended on a score of 27-14 Eagles. The final quarter was primarily a defensive game with the only score being a 2-point field goal scored by the Eagles Skyley Ramsey (12). Although the scoring was sparse each team had at least 4 free throw opportunities none of which were successful. The game ended with a decisive Eagles win on a score of 29-14. Eagles vs Flatirons Christian Academy The Eagles game against Flatirons Christian was played on the Eagle’s home court on Saturday, January the 18 th . This was the Eagle’s 7 th non-league game for the season. Eagles varsity boys outdone by Flatirons Bisons The Bisons started the scoring with 2 2-point field goals and maintained their lead through the 1 st quarter with an additional 2 2-point field goals, 2 3-pointers and 2 free throws. The Eagles answered with 2 2-pointers, 1 3-pointer and 1 free throw for a period score of Eagles 8 to the Bisons 16. In the 2 nd quarter the Eagles outscored the Bisons and fought their way back to within 2 points of the Bisons. The Bisons landed 1 2-point field goal, 2 3-pointers and 2 free throws for 10 points scored during the quarter. The Eagles finished the quarter with 4 2-point field goals, 2 3-point field goals and 2 free throws adding 16 points for the period. The 1 st half ended with the Eagles down by only 2 points on a score of 24-26 in favor of the Bisons. The Bisons outscored the Eagles by 7 points in the 3 rd quarter ending the period with a 9-point Bison advantage. During the period the Bisons recorded 7 2-point field goals, 1 3-pointer and 1 free throw compared to the Eagles 1 2-point field goal, 1 3-pointer and 6 free throws. The 3 rd quarter concluded with a score of 44-35 favoring the Bisons. While the 4 th quarter saw the Bisons score 10 points with 3 2-point field goals and 4 free throws the Eagles scored only 6 points with 1 2-point field goal, 1 3-pointer and 1 free throw. The game ended with a score of Eagles 41 to the Bisons 54. Point leaders for the Eagles were Nolan Lindberg (24) with 14 points followed by Stephen King (24) with 12 points. Boulter (25) and Lindberg (24) each made 7 rebounds. Gilpin’s Lady Eagles bend to the Flatiron Bisons The Lady Eagles fell behind the Bisons in the 1 st quarter by 9 points scoring 2 2-point field goals, 2 3-point field goals and 3 free throws. The Bisons, however, finished the quarter with 5 2-point field goals and 3 3-pointers. The quarter ended on a score of Eagles 13 to the Bisons 22 points. The Lady Eagles put together a robust 2 nd quarter making up the 9-point deficit to tie the score by the end of the quarter. The Eagles recorded 19 points in the quarter with 6 2-point field goals and 7 free throws. The Bisons produced 10 points with 4 2-point field goals and 2 free throws ending the first half with the score tied at 32-32. The 3 rd quarter saw the Lady Eagles battle their way to a 4-point lead. The Bisons counted 4 field goals for 8 points during the quarter while the Eagles presented 12 points by way of 6 field goals. The 3 rd period ended with the Eagles leading by 4 points with the score at 44-40. During the 4 th quarter the Eagles were limited to only 2 points by the Bison defense while the Bisons were able to establish 14 points with 5 2-point field goals and 4 free throws. With less than 3 minutes left in the game the Eagles put on a full court press but were unable to acquire the desired turnovers and instead committed 4 offensive fouls that increased the Bisons lead by 3 free throw points. The final game score was 46 to 54 in favor of the Bisons.
