Grand opening at Christ the King Community Church

Congregation welcomes community in celebration of new building By Patty Unruh Christ the King Community Church (CTK) held its grand opening on Sunday, August 11 at its new location, 971 Highway 46, across from the Gilpin County Fairgrounds. The group welcomed the community to join with them in a special celebration lasting most of the day. Activities included a meet and greet time with donuts and coffee, followed by the worship service, in which “Reflections,” a vocal group from Colorado Springs, shared a special musical program with the 145 people in attendance. Pastor Tom Davidson concluded the service with a short message about God’s amazing work in providing the building and in answering the prayers of a group of men who met initially 35 years ago to pray about a new church in this community. They asked God to give them a church where folks could attend and then go out to experience Him in the mountains, especially emphasizing ministry to children. Davidson exhorted the people not to underestimate the power of God to work when they place their trust in Him. CTK completed building its new facility last month and held its first service on July 7. The church began 14 years ago with a small group of people who met locally for Bible study. In 2008, a donation was made for the purchase of land. In 2010 the church held a ground breaking, and construction began in 2011. Most of the labor was done by volunteers from the church. Following the service, those attending enjoyed a potluck fellowship, which included barbecued hamburgers, bratwurst, hot dogs, corn on the cob, and homemade ice cream. The Isle of Capri Casino in Black Hawk donated ice and bottled water, and the church also offered a water bottle with the “Christ the King” logo as a gift to each person attending. Children’s activities were available throughout the day, including an interactive Bible lesson, fun games, creative crafts, and prizes. The contemporary Christian rock band Six Days and a Rest performed a free concert in the afternoon. Lead vocalist and songwriter Jaslyn (Jas) Melson said the Denver area group, which has been together for about two years, emphasizes worship and performs as a ministry. “We’re always looking for an opportunity to play and share the music God has given us,” she noted. The six members of the band all have other jobs and families. In addition to Melson, the members include Amy Graham on vocals, Jeff Hahn on rhythm guitar, Wade Dye on lead guitar, Matt Williams on drums, and Greg Melson on bass. Jas Melson, Wade Dye, and Jeff Hahn each write songs for the group, which plays mainly its own original music. The band was so well received that several from the church expressed a desire for them to return. The eight members of “Reflections” have previously sung at the church and present a beautiful and powerful blend of vocal harmonies in contemporary and classical Christian styles. Some of the group’s members recalled singing for the folks of Christ the King (CTK) when the church met in the Gilpin County School for worship. They expressed amazement “at what God has done in your new facility.” Reflections was formed in 2004, is highly skilled, and has many years of individual singing and performing experience. Its members come from various musical backgrounds, including church music, community, school and state choirs, as well as the Campus Crusade Traveling Choir, Continental Singers, and Philharmonic Choir. Members have performed individually throughout the nation and overseas. The group’s purpose is to present the Good News of Jesus Christ and to reflect His character in their song presentations, encouraging others to join in a fun time of praising God. A number of friends and family members joined the people of CTK for the occasion, and all expressed thanks and praise to God for His goodness and a sense of anticipation for what He will continue to do through the church. The philosophy at CTK is “there’s always a place for you.” The church is non-denominational, meeting each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. for an inspirational message and worship through live music in an informal blue jeans atmosphere, with coffee and snacks provided.
