Interview Highlights:

Q: Coach, you and your team battled a

tough, physical St. Mary’s lineup today.

What are your initial thoughts after the

final whistle?

A: “I’m proud of how our guys com-

peted. St. Mary’s was big, physical, and

they gave us plenty to handle, especially

in the first half. Our defense struggled at

first with their quarterback and the way

their senior ran the option, but the way

the team responded in the second half is

what really gives me a good outlook for

the season. We outscored St. Mary’s after

halftime, and those adjustments show

we’ve got heart and a strong foundation to

build upon as the season goes on.”

Q: Gilpin rolled out a new look on

offense this week, passing for over 250

yards. What do you make of that perfor-

mance?

A: “Our new passing game, led by Vinny

Schoell (No. 4), showed its potential.

Vinny distributed the ball well, and our

two standout receivers, Landon Church

(No. 8) and Ryan Marr (No. 5), made big

plays, both reaching the end zone. We fin-

A: “Even with the loss, I see positives. The team

never quit, and they fought for four quarters, setting

the tone for how we want to play in future games.

With a bye week ahead, we have extra time to heal

up and sharpen up for Lake County. The future’s

bright for this group, and I can’t wait to see how far

we can go together.”

Despite the final score, the Gilpin Eagles proved

that they are a team with heart, talent and the ability

to make big plays against tough competition. The

unveiling of an explosive passing attack, combined

with the second-half defensive improvement, points

to an exciting and promising season ahead. With a

bye week to regroup, Gilpin County is ready to keep

building and make improvements when they return

to action at Lake County on Sept. 12.

No football this weekend—Gilpin

High School’s varsity football team doesn’t

have a game scheduled for this weekend.

The Eagles will return to the gridiron next

weekend.

This week, Sept. 1-6

Friday, Sept. 5—Teacher in-

service day.

Saturday, Sept. 6—High

school jayvee volleyball at Straus-

burg tournament. The Eagles will

play Fort Lupton at 10 a.m., Byers at

11, Pinnacle at 2 p.m. and another yet-

announced match later in the afternoon.

Monday, Sept. 8—High school junior

varsity football at West Grand, 4:30 p.m.

— Tuesday, Sept. 9—High school volley-

ball at Byers, with the jayvee game at 4 and

varsity at 5 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 10—Middle school

football hosts Clear Creek, 4:30 p.m.

Thursday, Sept. 11—High school volley-

ball at Lyons. Junior varsity begins at 4 p.m.,

followed by varsity at 5.

Friday, Sept. 12—High school football at

Lake County (Leadville), 7 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 13—Middle school vol-

leyball tournament at home from 9 a.m. to 5

p.m.

Tuesday, Sept. 16—Middle school vol-

leyball at East Grand. The C-team will play at

4 p.m., followed by the B and A-teams

at 5 and 6, respectively.

Thursday, Sept. 18—High

school volleyball hosts Union

Colony Prep at 5 p.m. Middle

school football at Front Range

Christian. Time TBA.

Friday, Sept. 19—Middle

school football at South Park, 4

p.m. High school varsity football at

South Park, 7 p.m.

Tuesday, Sept. 23—High school volley-

ball at Sky View Academy. Junior varsity at 5

p.m., followed by varsity at 6.

Wednesday, Sept. 24—Middle school

volleyball at Estes Park. Games begin at 4 p.m.

Thursday, Sept. 25—Middle school foot-

ball at Fitzsimmons. Time TBA. Middle school

volleyball hosts Belleview Christian. The B-team

plays at 4:15, followed by the A-team at 5 p.m.

Friday, Sept. 26—High school football

hosts Justice High School (Lafayette), 7 p.m.

Note—This will not be the Eagles’ homecom-

ing game, as originally announced.

change due to a variety of factors, including

weather.
