Black Hawk ends pandemic orders

Gilpin County Education Foundation

By Sarah Swanson

Last Saturday, September 21, the Gilpin County Education Foundation held its 3rd Annual Scholarship Dinner at the Isle of Capri Casino. The dinner included nearly 50 guests who came to support the students in Gilpin County. Guests were treated to a wonderful three course steak dinner. Kenny Larson, who received a scholarship from the Foundation last year, attended to share with the guests how the scholarship helped him with his first year of college and to thank everyone for their support. Following dinner, Rick Salinger, investigative reporter from CBS News4, offered guests a peak into his fascinating career covering stories across Colorado and as a foreign correspondent in London and the Middle East. He shared a wonderful story about his most memorable experience as a reporter. He explained that, while traveling on a personal vacation, he had the opportunity to visit a Cambodian refugee camp in Thailand. Upon his return to Colorado, he shared the story on the evening news and explained that their biggest need was shoes for the refugees. He said he was humbled by the community response and that he was able to return to the camp and provide over 5,000 pairs of donated shoes to the refugees.
The Gilpin County Education Foundation looks forward to providing three graduating seniors with a $1,000 scholarship to help with their first year of college thanks to the generosity of the guests and the three dinner sponsors: Isle of Capri Casino, the Saratoga Casino, and The Clinton Family Fund. All students living in Gilpin County, regardless of the school they attend, who will graduate in 2014 and are planning to attend college in the fall, are eligible for these scholarships. Scholarship applications are available on the Foundation’s website at: https://gilpineducationfoundation.wordpress.com.
