If the city of Denver fails in its drive to win a major league franchise, at least the masses in Gilpin County won’t be entirely let down. A group of students at Gilpin County School have been lobbying with the school board for the past eight months in an attempt to bring a high school baseball team to Gilpin High. The students, led by Jon Avram, Mike Bauer, Fred Weber, and Jason Wheeler believe that a baseball team would be very successful, and a winning tradition could be built through the program. When the school board approved a team for this year, it was a great group as well as personal victory for the students. A lot of work was put into presentations, potential, budgeting and impact problems. With the approval of the team, the school board also elected to budget $4,000 for the program to cover the cost of transportation and salaries for officials and coaches. The rest of the money for equipment and uniforms is yet to be raised and the community is urged to help. Contributions or advice can be sent to the school. Baseball is sure to be a hit at Gilpin and the community is invited to be a part of it.
