30 years ago - August 31, 1984 The entry in the Central City -KHOW Gravity Grand Prix held last Saturday was just one of many in the Main Street contest. There were a number of odd vehicles and drivers that showed up to compete including the hot dog entered by the Gold Star Sausage Company. Driven by Herb Bolton, it won first place in the business category. Chuck Olson, driving the “Blue Diamond,” won top honors in the individual category. The Gilded Garter’s entry, driven by Dennis Peaches, won for originality. The Republican Central Committee will resume meetings with the first scheduled for Thursday evening, September 6, at 7:30p.m., in the courthouse. All members are asked to attend. Ton Harrison will present anecdotes and highlights of the Republican National Convention in Dallas. He and Cherry Emerson were elected alternates to the convention. Refreshments will be served at the meeting. Voters are reminded to participate in the primary election on Tuesday, September 11. Van Cullar and Jean Pail Bernier are contesting for the Republican nomination for County Commissioner. We are happy to report that Morgan Gray, our loyal ex-officio central committee member, is recovering well following surgery at St. Anthony’s Hospital. Our best wishes for a speedy recuperation are sent to him. The Central City Council will meet Wednesday, September 5, for the regular monthly meeting. City Clerk/ Administrator Jack Hidahl says that at least two items of general interest will be addressed. A representative of Stage Cable TV will be on hand to report on the company’s progress with the city’s cable television system. This will be good opportunity for people who have questions about the system to ask them directly, he says. Another issued to be addressed is that of carrying unloaded weapons in town as part of a costume and staged mock gun fights. People with opinions should be there, Hidahl says. Dwight D. Ross of Dory Lakes received his B.A. degree in Business Administration Accounting from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, on August 11. Ross is a 1979 graduate of Clear Creek High School in Idaho Springs. He is the son of Maxine and Wade Ross of Dory Lakes in Gilpin County. Appearing in this week’s paper is the Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance adopted by the Black Hawk City Council. Once instated, it will mean that residents of Black Hawk who have structures located in the identified floor plain will be able to get cheaper insurance protection. It will also allow residents to obtain insurance through the federal program, thus lowering the overall cost of flood insurance through individual insurance companies. Prior to adoption of the ordinance, Black Hawk was under an “emergency program.” This program allowed flood insurance for a single family dwelling up to only $35,000. Insurance was or could be obtained through private insurance companies and the insurance premium rates were high. Under the new ordinance, referred to as the “regular program,” insurance can be obtained for up to $185,000 for a single family dwelling. Businesses can get insurance for an even greater amount of damage. Insurance continues to be obtained through individual insurance companies, but will be covered under the federal program. Through the federal program, not only can the insured amount be greater than before, but insurance can be obtained for a lower cost. 60 years ago - September 3, 1954 Curtis White, Colorado Securities Commissioner, has tightened up stock offering regulations. A survey certificate showing the location of claims must be supplied Mr. White along with a report prepared by a mining engineer or geologist detailing a description of the property, geological features, mineralization, occurrence and disposition of ore bodies and other features of which the investor should be informed. Regulations require the companies to list principal mineral constituent of any ore bodies or deposits and the methods used in determining the mineral content. Also required are reports on the result of any testing and the nature of the title under which each property is held or is to be held. If the claims are unpatented, a statement of interest in these claims known to the issuer, along with a title opinion, copy of leases, contracts, and assignments must be filed. Watch out for children alighting from school buses, the Rocky Mountain AAA Club today warned Colorado motorists as schools throughout the state began opening their doors for the fall semester. Colorado is one of only three states that allow motorists to drive unchecked past a stopped school bus, said the AAA. Four other states allow motorists to continue past the bus after coming to a full stop. Two states require only vehicles approaching from the rear to stop. But the remaining 39 states have laws requiring vehicles approaching from either direction to stop and wait for the bus to continue. Exceptions are made in most states for divided highways. In Colorado, motorists must slow to 10 miles per hour when driving past a stopped school bus. Colorado still has some mountain goats. This was established this week when Bert E. Still and Wesley Moore of Colorado Springs, scouting an area where they expect to hunt bighorn mountain sheep Sept. 11-19, discovered a small band of Rocky Mountain goats at the head of Baldman Creek, on Carbonate Mountain approximately seven miles from Shavano Peak. A band of 15 mountain goats, obtained from Montana in a trade for bighorn mountain sheep, was released on Shavano Peak in May, 1949. The goats disappeared shortly after being placed, but were reported being seen the following spring on Harvard Mountain, about 25 miles from the point of release. Since then they had not been seen again until Still and Moore came upon a small band of one billy, two nannies and a kid this week. This band is believed to be only a small group that has separated from the main herd obtained from Montana. 90 years ago - August 29, 1924 We have received from reliable sources the information that all of the mining claims held by the Sternberger Brothers in Gilpin and Clear Creek counties have been sold to a rich eastern syndicate for $1,500,000. The property consist of several hundred patented mining claims and a number of locations, located in the heart of the mining districts located in both counties, and many of them could be put in shape for a nominal sum and leased, and made to produce a nice income for the company which has acquired them. The deal is expected to be finished this week, when the original transfer will be made to the new company. Colorado’s oil development, which will make of the state one of the greatest oil and gas producers in the world, came one step nearer realization a few days ago when the well of the Midwest Refining Company, three miles west of Berthoud, came in with an estimated flow of 2,000,000 cubic feet a day. At the same time activity in other oil sections of the state was continued at top speed. Four different wells are within a matter of feet from the oil and gas-bearing sands it is estimated by geologists, with indications that in another week these will be driven down to the necessary depth for production. Plans are being completed in for the official opening of the eighteen-mile extension of the Union Pacific Railroad line north from Fort Collins, and the date for the celebration has been set for Thursday, Aug. 28. Railroad officials and the Fort Collins Chamber of Commerce are cooperating. A special train will bring President Carl Gray of the road and his party from Denver, and another special train will take the Fort Collins contingent to the end of the line, where short addresses will be made and refreshments will be served. Two business houses at Swink, in La Junta, were burglarized when merchandise totaling nearly $1,000 was stolen. The grocery and dry goods store of L.F. Arraj was entered when thieves pried open the front door. A large array of women’s ready to wear and many small articles were taken and the barber shop of Frank Casteel was burglarized when razors, clippers and other barber tools, together with a large quantity of tobacco and cigars were taken. Dr. Joseph B. Cherry of Omaha, Neb., champion old man climber of Pike’s Peak, made his seventy-second trip recently by way of the Barr Trail, making the trip in six hours and twenty minutes, and the return journey in two hours and thirty minutes over the cog road. A special excursion train for the Colorado State Fair will leave Montrose about 5 a.m., Monday, September 22, and call at Grand Junction, Delta, and other towns along the route and give the patrons of the excursion a delightful ride across the range via standard gauge for $13.00 round trip. 120 years ago - August 31, 1894 Mr. August Divickey was a visitor to his Central friends Monday and Tuesday for the first time in several weeks. Since becoming a denizen of a high altitude, exposed to all sorts of weather, he has become as rugged as a cinnamon bear. He reports that there is renewed activity among the miners and mine-owners of that locality; that the new concentration works at Silver City is doing exceedingly good work. The camp is attracting a great deal of attention from people outside of the state, and visitors to the mines are of daily occurrence, the hacks arriving daily with passengers. Our Teutonic friend may yet become a millionaire, having secured mining interests in which he has an abiding, if not unbounded, faith. There has been some delay encountered in starting up the new 10 stamp mill, Hendrie & Bolthoff pattern, which adjoins the Empire Mill on the north end of Black Hawk. It was anticipated that the mill would have been completed and running this week. The placement of a new engine, as also the digging of a large well extending to creek bed-rock caused the delay. Mr. Henry Bolthoff, who is here, thinks that the mill will be in readiness to run about the middle of next week. The results of this new mill are anxiously looked forward to by a large number of mill and mining men of Gilpin County. Born: In Central City, August 26, to the wife of Michael Downs, a son. Born: In Central City, August 24, to the wife of John Martin, a daughter. Born: In Central City, August 27th, to the wife of Wm. McKibbin, a daughter. Married: In Black Hawk, August 29, Milton F. Fick and Miss Ella Fisher. Died: In Denver, August 26, Obed Crisman, in his 77th year. Deceased was an old pioneer of Colorado, locating at Missouri City in 1860, where he conducted a hotel. He left that place in 1862 and located at Black Hawk, where he opened a boarding house, where the present post office now stands. Mr. Thomas R. Saunders, of Black Hawk, married his eldest daughter. Several other children now grown to manhood survive him. Died: In Nevadaville, August 27, Pearl Olive, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Nichols. Died: In Sierra Mojada, Mexico, August 11, of heart disease, Harry P., son of T.H. and M.A. Mitchell, aged 8 years. Deceased has long suffered from rheumatic fevers and heart troubles at periods, and was brought to Mexico from England one year ago by advice of his physician, hoping that the change to a dry and warm climate might be beneficial to him. For a while he did well and hopes of a permanent improvement were entertained, but alas, he was again attacked, and after ten weeks of suffering and careful nursing, he passed away. Died: In Idaho Springs, August 22, Matthew Perry, aged 44 years.
