Local musician Jimmy Lewis passed at 75

Jimmy Lewis, a resident of

Russell Gulch, peacefully left this

Earth on March 22, 2025. The

popular longtime resident of

Gilpin County created a legacy

through his music, regularly per-

forming throughout the county

and beyond for several decades.

Born in Philadelphia on April

29, 1949, he left his home-

town for Colorado during the

hippie era of the 1970s and

arrived in Idaho Springs

to meet his friends Greg

Markle and Jeff Aiken.

He quickly began play-

ing guitar at local venues

and continued to perform

and schedule gigs until

shortly before his death.

Jim met the love of his

life, Annie, while playing

music at the former Silver

Slipper Saloon in Central

City, and they married on Oct.

1, 1978. The wedding took

place in Russell Gulch, with the

groom and three other horsemen

thundering down the ridge to the

ceremony. They celebrated 46

years of marriage and had two

talented sons: Paul Willis

and Grady Lewis.

Over the years, Jim’s golden voice

and self-taught guitar skills delighted

audiences of all ages at various

events in Gilpin and Clear Creek

counties. Like many other local

musicians, including his sons,

Jim entertained patrons at JKQ BBQ

at Crook’s Palace until early February

2025. He was also a regular performer

at premier local events such as the Great

Central City Beer Festival, Madam Lou Bunch

Day, and Stills in the Hills.

Friends and family will remember Jim for his

sense of humor, his ability to entertain a crowd,

and always having a joke at the tip of his tongue. No

one could resist Jim when he flashed his mischievous

Leprechaun smile and twinkled his eyes beneath his

Gandalf-like eyebrows.

Almost every spring, Jim and Annie traveled to visit

her sister, Lucy, in Maui, where he enjoyed being at

the beach and savoring delicious meals. Jim enjoyed

camping in his trailer, Babydoll, making several trips

to Valley View Hot Springs in the San Luis Valley

and other destinations on the Western Slope. The

artist in Jim was evident around his home in Russell

Gulch, where he created and displayed stone crea-

tures and recycled wire and metal sculptures, often

pairing them with old mining paraphernalia.
