Shield 616 returns to donate active-shooter tactical

Shield 616 founder and president Jake Skifstad was at the Gilpin

County Sheriff’s office on Feb. 24 to present four Gilpin County

Sheriff Deputies with the latest in active-shooter tactical gear.

Vests usually worn by officers are made to protect against hand-

guns, whereas the new Angle Armor vests donated by Shield 616

are made to protect against rifle rounds like those from an AR-15.

In January 2022, Shield616 presented 34 armor packages to

individual deputies in the Gilpin County Sheriff’s Department. Last

Monday’s donations were paid for with funds left over from those

donations. The 2022 primary motivators and fundraisers were resi-

dents Lewis and Dianna Wagner, Heather Newman, Joe Stranaly

and a few anonymous donors.

The deputies receiving donated gear were Scott Bailey, Wes

Jones, Zach Meyer and David Rak. Each kit consisted of a special-

ized vest, lightweight front and rear rifle protective plates, and a

new King James Bible. Following the presentation, the ceremony

was closed with a prayer by Pastor Joshua Bloom of Christ the King

Community Church of Gilpin County.

Jake Skifstad was a police officer and first responder to the New

Life Church shooting in Colorado Springs in 2007. After 14 years of

service as a police officer, he left the department to start Shield616,

a non-profit corporation, with a vision “To help first responders go

toward danger knowing that they have the best physical protection

available and the love of their community behind them But most

importantly, we want our first responders to know they can put

their hope and trust in the ultimate provider of safety and peace;

Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office officers, including Sergeant Scott Bailey, Deputy Zach Meyer,

Deputy David Rak and Sergeant Wes Jones, received Shielf616 body armor recently. The

body armor, paid for by a resident’s donation, is considered state-of-the-art for protection.

The non-profit Shield616 organization, which presented armor to other GCSO officers in

the past, said its mission is “to make Kingdom impacts by protecting and serving those who

serve and protect.” Jake Skifstad, founder and president of the group, said, “We believe

when our peace officers and first

responders are well equipped,

cal gear to Gilpin County Sheriff deputies.

The Alan Green Memorial Foundation is accepting scholarship applications

from high school seniors to continue their education. To be eligible the student

must be a resident of Gilpin County but may be home schooled or attending Gilpin,

Nederland or other high schools outside of Gilpin County.

Alan Green Memorial Foundation is a non-profit Gilpin County organiza-

tion founded in 1983 by family and friends of Alan Green. His parents, Ken and

Lela Green, lost their son and his wife (Judy) in a commercial plane crash. Over

$275,000 has been distributed in student scholarships through the years.

Applications are accepted for all types of further education, including attend-

ing a trade school, certificate program, university, or college. A scholarship is

normally $2,000 or more. The applicant’s response to questions on the applica-

tion is considered more important than GPA or class standing.

A Leadership Award of $60,000 towards tuition and/or other school

expenses ($15,000 per year for four years) is also given to one student. The

Leadership Scholarship is additional and optional to complete (not instead of)

the regular Senior Scholarship. It will be judged on the applicant’s thoughts

regarding “great” leadership skills and personal “leadership” activities within

the school or community. (GPA standing is not significant).
