The Gilpin High girls’ soccer team contin-

ued its winning streak during the past week,

sweeping past four opponents to improve

their record to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the

Class 2A Mile High League.

The Eagles defeated neighboring Neder-

land, 1-0, with a first-half goal on Monday

to record their fourth consecutive shutout.

Last Saturday, the Gilpin team blanked visit-

ing Bruce Randolph (3-5) by a 4-0 score.

Senior Jiselle Osteboe led Gilpin with two

goals while senior Dannika Sternlicht and

sophomore Jennifer Rodriguez-Jiminez each

contributed one.

The squad opened last week with a 9-0

shutout of host Estes Park on April 7. Lead-

ing the Eagles was junior Adele Fisher with

three goals and Rodriguez-Jiminez with two.

Also scoring against the Bobcats were Stern-

licht, juniors Molly Brennan and Elise Bren-

nan, and freshman Acadia Bowman.

The Eagles followed with a 10-0 win at Bel-

leview Christian on April 10. Jiselle Osteboe

led Gilpin with four goals while Sternlicht

and junior Gretchen Osteboe chipped in two

each. Fisher and Rodriguez also scored for

the visitors.

Are two new resort casinos in the works for Central?

It’s not uncommon for

Central City residents to hear

stories about someone plan-

ning to open a new casino in

their community. Such tales

have come and gone for near-

ly 15 years since John Zimpel

opened Johnny Z’s Casino on

Lawrence Street in 2010.

The stories about “new

casinos” are circulating once

more, although Central City

Manager Daniel Miera stated

that the potential devel-

opments are not entirely

unsubstantiated rumors.

Are there any plans for

Monarch-sized casino

gaming resorts in Central

City? “Right now, we have

two that are in the discus-

sion phase,” commented Miera.

“We don’t have any [formal]

applications in, so there’s noth-

ing pending before the city. I

wouldn’t be able to comment on

what the size would be or what

it would be comparable to, but I

do think a larger-scale develop-

ment of some sort would be able

to assist the city in helping make

strides in our economic or fiscal

potential developments are being

considered for the Gregory Gulch

Gaming District rather than for

the Big T Parking Lot area across

Nevada Street from city hall.

Miera remarked, “I think any

project that we’re in discussions

about now or in the future, once

they move forward in the [city]

process, will be an open process

for the public. Once we have

something, everybody will know

City’s Urban Development Au-

thority learned of casino devel-

opment plans. One proposal,

presented by THK Associated

in conjunction with Obermeier

Skeykhet Architecture and

DJ Ventures, was named the

“Gregory Gulch Gaming Resort.”

The proposed seven-acre

resort features a 600-room

hotel, a 100,000-square-

foot casino gaming floor, a

2,100-space parking garage, a

40,000-square-foot event center,

and additional amenities such as

restaurants and gift shops.

In comparison, the Gregory

Gulch Gaming Resort would

offer nearly the same number of

rooms as the Monarch Casino

Resort Spa in Black Hawk and

feature a gaming area nearly 50

percent larger. The Monarch

expansion cost approximately

$400 million when it was com-

pleted in 2022. The site for the

Gregory Gulch Gaming Resort

would be located in the Greg-

ory Gulch ravine area between

Gregory and Lawrence Streets,

very close to Central City’s larg-

est casino, the Grand Z Casino

and Hotel.

Last month, the Central City

Urban Redevelopment Authority

held a closed-door session with

potential casino developers. The

County and the Gilpin

Amstel Holdings also with-

drew its request for a casino

license last fall. It planned to

open the Rocky Mountain Casino

in the former Central City Social

Club property on Lawrence

Street, situated between the

Central City Fire Department

and the proposed Bombshells

location.

A small casino license was

granted by the state for the

former Crystal Palace Casino

property located at 118 Main St.

However, the two businessmen

who renovated and intended to

reopen the property later de-

cided to put the building up for

sale. It remains unoccupied.

Another casino, named the

Monte Lobo, has been proposed

for the Main Street building that

was previously occupied by the

Doc Holliday Casino. However,

the developer’s pending applica-

tion for a casino license has been

awaiting state approval for over

two years.

Another potential Central City casino development is being studied

for property across the street from the Red Dolly Casino (lower left)

in Black Hawk. The narrow strip of land adjoins a steep rock hillside.

According to local sources, the gaming-zone land, which includes

a historic home, is owned by Ed Smith, operator of two small Black

Hawk casinos. However, he is not involved with the potential casino.
