Eagles’ football season concludes with awards program

Austin Boulter voted 2A Mile High League player of the year by Patty Unruh The Gilpin County High School football players were honored at a banquet and awards program at the Elks Lodge in Central City last Thursday, November 16. Head Coach Craig Ball summarized the team’s achievements this season. The Eagles finished with a 7-3 win-loss record. They won seven games in a row and were victorious in their homecoming game. They also beat two playoff teams, both on the road, and triumphed over a Top Four team. Gilpin was fourth in the league in total yards with 4,054, third in tackles with 739, and seventh in interceptions. They were proud to be invited to the state playoffs for the first time in many years. Coach Ball highlighted special awards and also outlined the accomplishments of the individual players. Academic All-Conference awards went to Angel Gomez, Jake Duncan, Josh Trujillo, and Austin Boulter. All-Conference First Team Defense honors went to Josh Trujillo (linebacker), Manny Gomez (linebacker), Angel Gomez (cornerback), and Jake Duncan (nose guard). First Team All-Conference Offense honors went to Jack Ball (running back) and Austin Boulter (quarterback). Stephen King made All-Conference Honorable Mention as a freshman. Austin Boulter earned a spot on the All-State team and was voted Player of the Year from the 2A Mile High League by the league coaches. The four senior captains were recognized: Jack Ball, Manny Gomez, Josh Trujillo, and Austin Boulter. Participation awards were given to John Rust, Will Innis, Jaime Alexander, and John Immordino. First-year varsity letters were presented to Angel Gomez, Stephen King, Nolan Lindberg, Blake Boulter, and Jessie Alexander. Second-year varsity letters went to Jake Duncan, Mike Wenholz and Daniel Jewell. Third-year letters were granted to Manny Gomez and Tristan Froio. Fourth-year letter recipients were Josh Trujillo, Jack Ball, and Austin Boulter. Coach Ball gave a special mention to long-time friends Jack Ball and Austin Boulter as “an offensive tandem.” “This tandem had more yards than any tandem in 8-man football this season at 3,500 combined yards,” the coach stated. “They scored more than any other tandem in 8-man, with 272 points. As an offensive coordinator, it is special to have your quarterback and running back make All-Conference. Austin scored the first touchdown of the season, and Jack scored the last touchdown of the season.” Jack Ball was Player of the Game in Gilpin’s playoff game against Sargent. Austin Boulter has the distinction of being the only runner to put 100 yards on West Grand. He rushed for over 1,900 yards (beating older brother Chase’s school record) and was third in the state. His 186 points scored was the third most in the state. Coach Ball expressed thanks to several individuals and groups, including family members, all coaches, the Isle of Capri, the Booster Club, the Elks Lodge for the banquet and donation of $1,000, Dostal Alley for providing steaks for the homecoming meal, team parents, Mrs. Newberg for financing the lights for the homecoming game, Roy’s Last Shot, and the team’s fans. He gave special thanks to Chase Boulter for all of his help during Coach Ball’s absence when he was called away from one of the games due to his father’s death. Parent Lisa Boulter was instrumental in fundraisers that brought in almost $3,000 over the past four years, plus team dinners, banquet organizations, and other contributions.
