Gilpin Veterans Memorial Day Ceremony Saturday, May 19 By John Boyer On Saturday morning, May 19 th at 11:00 am, the American Legion Post 166 and VFW Post 7563 will hold the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Gilpin Veteran’s Memorial, at the Gilpin Community Center, and a dedication of the newly inscribed Veteran’s bricks that are set at the Memorial. Everyone is invited, please come out and remember our Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our Country and freedoms. We hold this ceremony every year on the weekend of Armed Forces Day, to give everyone an opportunity to attend our short ceremony, as many folks also like to travel during Memorial Day weekend. Both Posts have been working to re-focus, new things are happening, and we are looking forward to some events this summer, from having our tent up at Central City Street Fairs and County events like the Fair and Rodeo, (not the tents like some of you old army guys slept in, we’ll have a chair to rest some old bones…) and some shade where we can meet our local Vets and our friends in the community. With new officers on deck, and much thanks to AL 166 Past Commander TO Dominguez and Past Commander Mike Ikeler for their service, both Posts are calling out for any Veterans interested in joining as members and getting involved with our community and assisting local Veterans. Russ served honorably in the Middle East and Afghanistan with the US Army and will be a capable Commander - our congratulations to Russ! The Posts meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of each month at 5:00 pm above the Dostal Alley. Everyone has a voice and we want to hear yours, we would love for any of you Veterans to join us. Both organizations are dedicated to helping Veterans in many ways. We will be having guest speakers at our meetings to present a variety of interesting subjects, and plan to organize visits to the VA Hospital and other Posts, we have volunteer spots for Rocky Mountain Honor Flight, and are organizing an Honor-Color Guard among other plans. A BBQ for Veterans in the County is being planned for July 4 th and then fireworks viewing in Blackhawk. Auxiliary Posts are important to the community and for the health of local AL Posts. At one point in the history of the American legion in Central City, the Women’s Auxiliary membership outnumbered the Post members, (which would be welcomed again!) AL Post 166 Communication Chairman John Boyer is in the process of organizing a local chapter of The Sons Of American Legion, and State of Colorado Commander Jim Gaddis visited Central City and explained the Sons mission in supporting local posts at the last meeting, and if any parent or grandparent was a veteran and member of the American Legion the sons are eligible. There are already ten interested individuals for the Charter for Central City, so if you can and are interested in joining the Sons, contact John Boyer at 949-300-4885, www.Boyer241@outlook.com for more information. We will also be adding websites for both Posts online soon, with pictures, calendars of upcoming events, etc., links to County and National services and social media and a way to assist our non-profit organizations with programs such as our donor bricks that are placed at the Gilpin County Veterans Memorial (see pic and caption). New forms available soon and the ability to also order online are planned. The www.vfwpost7563.org site is being developed and if anyone would like to contribute pictures of past ceremonies, or history or stories of Veterans from the County or of relatives, or pictures, (please include captions and credits), and submit to james@vfwpost7563.org . We are excited, and as you can see new things are happening. Please come join American Legion Post 16 and VFW Post 7563 on Saturday morning, May 19, at 11 am sharp when our ceremony will begin.
